Ever seen a B 17 wag its wings?
Boeing is about 2 miles to the west of me at LGB. They test fly C-17's frequently. When they get ready to deliver one, they do a fly over after initial take off and circling around. That's when thet wag those huge wings to salute those on the ground that built the thing.
Cool to watch. It's in slow motion. The whole thing is in slow motion it's so big. One just left. We are selling them now to foreign buyers. ![]() ![]() This is what I saw and this is Long Beach as you can see the Cal State Long Bach pyramid in the beginning. The wag comes at the end. It was a commemorative flyby. It was to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the C-17 “T-1” (flight test ship #1) first flight. T-1 flew three low flybys over the airport before heading back to Edwards AFB. Traffic stuck on the tarmac was asking the tower what was the delay. The tower responded “Wait a minute and you’ll hear”.

Gary, I actually saw the plane do this yesterday and I caught the same today. But today the pilot was really hot dogging. He flew back around and banked that monster like it was a fighter. Then he did a much bigger and quicker waggle out at the end of LGB 30. What a sight! This is good stuff and I don't like planes. |

I've seen a B-17 do it at Oshkosh. Never seen a C-17 do it though.

Those beasts do touch-and-gos out at March. Amazing how quick those can get up in the air, and how little noise they make.

Looks like it's going 30mph.
Saw my one and only C-17 fly into the Akron Canton airport last fall. I was three miles south of the airport. Pretty sure it said Edwards AFB on the tail (not that I could not read the letters - memory). Huge and impressive. |

I can remember going to see the very first C-17 take off for the first time.
History like that only happens once. I'm glad I got to see it.

Lots of B-52's stationed at Fairchild AFB in Spokane for the first few decades of my life. They flap their wings when they take off, like a bird. The wings droop on the ramp, flap down the runway, then stiffen at takeoff.

Big aluminum clouds right Milt.
![]() I think Wag is a funny word. ![]() "rock your wings" might be more common. Jeff Alton might use the term "wag" daily on the freq as ATC. ![]() Agree, when a heavy jet does it you can't miss it. ![]() yes just working on my post count today. ![]() |

Great video
A former coworker of mine's wife piloted these into Iraq to pick up wounded with a mobile ICU and transport to Germany or Walter Reed. She said they would fly over the target landing area, cut the engines and lights and spiral down to the desert floor, load up and blast off. She showed me a youtube video once of something like this and it was impressive. Big airplane for sure.

I'm not a pilot and I can't remember if they completely glided in (that's what you mean I think) but I seem to recall thinking that. Talking to a hardcore female USAF pilot like her about missions while at war wasn't the easiest because they speak in code!

The air noise the thing makes is huge. I doubt anyone would attempt to land a C 17 dead stick. With engines cut and the flaps down, you still know something big is coming in.

No dead stick. Tac descents. Lights out in and out of the AOR early on with NVGs. Trying to stay over the field to minimize the threat. The 20th year of the C17 and only 1 loss of aircraft and crew is an amazing feat considering all that the crews have been doing with this incredible jet. It has done everything that it was designed for and in combat conditions. Former C-17 loadmaster here (11 years).
