Anyone here an expert with resumes?
I think my resume needs help. I submitted it to Climber.com the other day and, though I refused to pay them for the next level or a real human critique, their software did spit out an automated critique a day later and it got me thinking.
I have 10 yrs. at the same job and, honestly, I wouldn't take any other job in my company. I'd like to make more money and do different things, but I have a very sweet gig in a very bad job market, and I don't consider anything else in my company to be a promotion. So account manager or senior account manager is about the most I have to show for 10 yrs. working for the same boss. I don't think I can put in there that I work from home in my underwear, ride my motorcycle all over CA to meet with clients and generally don't consider this to be real work. A good friend paid $600 to one of those resume writing services and I wasn't impressed at all by what he got for it. I get called a few times a year for jobs I apply for online. Most of them I'm not excited about and so I don't care about not getting to the next level of the interview process. The fact that I get calls now and then leads me to believe my resume isn't awful. But I'd like to have someone other than a hiring manager at a job I'm applying for take a look at it and be honest with me. Anyone here? FWIW, I got my first job out of college over another guy I knew well because, per the woman who hired me, my resume was totally honest, while his was padded with all kinds of euphemisms for doing the same mind-numbing call center job I did. So I have never put all kinds of "increased revenue by X" this and "won president's club trip to Cancun" that in there.

For help with your resume
Hi Rick Lee,
For help with your resume, as well as interview and hiring tactics, contact CareerClout LLC (Resume Writing, Executive Resumes, Career Counseling in NYC - HOME). The company is run by a very old friend of mine, who has been and continues to be quite successful with this service. Based in New York, but with the world of electronic mail, etc., location shouldn't be a limiting factor. Cheers and Good Luck! Lars

i find that writing my resumes and helping a couple of friends. the resume should be factual and PROMOTE your skills. it also can be spun so that your tedious boring medial tasks can be made to SOUND better but w/o lying.
alot of the most important things that people don't stress enough on their resumes is good organization and time management. when you have 10 projects going on at once and you need to be on top of every one of them w/o dropping the ball, that's a big thing! |

Ok, does anyone suggest putting a summay or objective at the top? I've been in the real job working world since 1995, but don't consider anything before my sales career to be very relevant to any future job. I've been in sales since 1998. Should my resume be no more than one page? Most places these days take it as an uploaded file, but I still wonder about cramming too much onto one page or turning someone off with a second page.

IMO, resumes need to be custom to target any specific job.
Online versions should have hyperlinks for expansion ...for points of interest.
