I hope I die right when I run out of money. Uh oh, that could be any day now...

Anyone else think the folks behind the calulator have a vested interest in optomistic calculations?

Said 95 for me, but old people do run in my family. My grandmother was 98 or 99 when she died. My dad lived to be 78 despite being high strung, not taking care of himself, and having a lung disease the docs thought was caused by asbestos exposure. My dad's sister lived well into her 90s, too.

Didn't everyone's parents and grandparents smoke back in the day? I remember my dad saying his dad put butter on devil's food cake. They didn't have light anything back then, no diet soda, no margarine, no lowfat milk, not a lot of gym memberships and everyone smoked. How is my grandmother still kicking at 89? Her husband died at 85. I knew his mom and she died at 100. Somehow, I think that generation knew how to live well and long by not being too worried about living long.

That's great (if they lived well)!! But the calulator is sponsored by a retirement company...

They may have had good outlooks on life but odds are that they've also dramatically benefited from "advancements" in nearly everything (from clean water to medicine to transportation to...) about daily living. Not that folks don't die young today but the life expectancy averages continue to grow.

Would you rather classify it as a unregulated non-filtered cigarette?

I know there are no easy answers to this, but what are at least SOME of the scientific explanations for this? My grandma used to eat bacon grease sandwiches (toast with solidified bacon grease spread on it), and lived to 96! She never exercised. How do we explain that? What are the big drivers of heart-attack and stroke today that different from then? Can't be bacon!!!

It sorta depends. My maternal grandfather made 95 ( his younger brother was 107 last we heard), my grandmother made it to 104. No fitness regimen, no diet concerns, and they had 10 kids - 7 girls and 3 boys. (It always cracked me up when they said they stopped smoking and drinking when they started having kids - he was 19 and she was 15 when they married!)

However, when they retired, they retired. They put two lawn chairs on the porch, a table with a pitcher of lemonade between those, and spent their time waving at passing neighbors and chatting with their kids, about half of which swung by everyday. With that activity level, you could describe their lifestyle as risk-averse.

1) No processed food. Natural foods (like fresh vegetables and whole grain bread instead of processed flour) have higher nutrition, lower sodium and other chemicals...
2) Exercise? Ha! She had to haul water, chop wood for the stove, wash clothes with a washboard...
3) Some of my favorite heresies:
-hard work doesn't make people live longer...it kills off the weaker ones. Your heart is like a motor: don't put extra miles on it and it will last longer.
-all that grease made the cholesterol slide right through the arteries...
-exercise, no red meat, fats, or sugars in your diet, low stress... doesn't make you live longer. It just seems that way.

The calculator said......

95, but that is when I am going to have my mid life crisis!

Noah930 09-18-2011 05:15 PM

I suppose that's as good a time as any to pick up a young, 20-something GF...

No kidding, didn't ask about extreme sports, or anything like that either

If you do get term life insurance, they sure do ask about this. Sky diving? Skin or scuba diving? Private pilot? Drive cars in timed events? The insurance statisticians will notch you down one category if you are active in any of these.
