The Porsche 911 is dead, long live the Porsche 911. The German automaker's latest and greatest has taken to the Nürburgring where old marks have fallen hard. The 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S was sent through the Green Hell, where it promptly beat the time achieved by the prior 997 version by a whopping 13 seconds.

With a time of 7:40, the 2012 911 matches the mark set by the previous 911 GT3. If you happen to own a previous generation 911 GT3, we'll pause here for a moment while you go out to smash something with a hammer.

Back? Great. You shouldn't fret too much, because this just means the next-generation GT3 should be a land rocket capable of blistering the surface of the 'Ring. GT2 guys, your numbers are still safe... for now.

Excellent.

What I really like about this is that it will annoy the hell out of all those prats on Rennlist who scrambled to place their orders for last year's GTS because it was last "perfect Porsche".

GH85Carrera 09-22-2011 05:53 AM

Wow. I wonder what the GT3 and the GT2 versions will do?

kaisen 09-22-2011 07:53 AM

The new 911's 7:40 is still 17 seconds slower than a 2012 Corvette Z06/Z07 at 7:22.68.
I wonder what DOT-legal Michelin Pilot Cup Sport tires would do for the 991's time....

I have been thinking of sneaking down to the Ring by night and do a lap on a bicycle. That would be something to brag about.

It would be lower, of course, but how many seconds would be shaved?

It would be pretty funny to show up to a trackday with a nurburgring sticker on your pit bike. :)

Yeah. Looking the business. :D

That's amazing but almost doesn't seem possible(??) It blows my mind how much more performance these crazy engineers are finding in street cars.

Cue the comments about how "it still isn't as good as my SC".

Well, it isn't as light as the SC, so someone will call it fat....

Absolutely! There is a 24 hour bicycle race in Florida where the first 12 hours are out on the public road, and the next 12 hours are on the Sebring race track.

It's always held in February. I usually do an event in Arizona, but one of these times, I'm going to do the Sebring event. Of course, I'll have to detour over a bit and take BVD to lunch while I'm there!

I too think that Porsche hasn't done enough until they can do what GM did with the ZR1/Z06 lineup. The Z06 is around as much as a Carerra S and a the Z06 is infinitely faster...the ZR1 is as much as a GT3 and the same applies. Quality is much higher on the Porsche but so is price generally...Porsche should be able to beat out little old Corvette.
