The police commish made this statement because they now have Barret .50 cals in their arsenal. He never said that would would actually do it. Just that they have the capability

I'm OK with it.
Seems they are sending a message, "Find another target".

Gimme a break. I sure wish someone would take an old airliner, and using remote control, let the thing fly around at 5000ft above some trained snipers. Let them bang away all day long with Barretts. Eventually someone might get a lucky shot and cripple the thing, but your certainly not going to 'shoot down' an airliner coming at the city going 500mph with Abdullah at the controls.

NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly: New York cops can blow planes out of sky - NYPOST.com
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly dropped a bombshell last night — the NYPD has weapons powerful enough to blow a rogue aircraft out of the sky. Kelly — answering questions about the department's state-of-the-art anti-terrorism system on CBS’s “60 Minutes’’ — admitted that the city is packing an arsenal on par with some militaries. “Do you mean to say that the NYPD has the means to take down an aircraft?” interviewer Scott Pelley pressed Kelly. “Yes. I prefer not to get into details, but obviously, this would be in a very extreme situation,” Kelly replied. Warzer jaff Ray Kelly Police sources told The Post that the weapon that Kelly was referring to involves a Barret .50 caliber rifle, which can be mounted on almost any police chopper. The weapon, which the department has had for four years, is stored in an NYPD safe and is deployed only for “special occasions,” such as when the president is in town, the sources added. The gun is available only to the military and law-enforcement agencies. Similar armed helicopters are used by the Coast Guard to disable outboard engines on boats from the air during chases. Weapons analysts said one .50 caliber round fired into a car engine would stop the vehicle cold. The bullets — variations of which have been used by the military since the 1920s — will penetrate most commercial brick walls and concrete cinder blocks. Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne confirmed last night that “NYPD Aviation has weapons that could be deployed with that capability.” During the televised segment, Kelly also showed off his high-tech, hidden bunker, where a supercomputer helps monitor a $150 million surveillance network of at least 2,000 cameras in lower Manhattan and thousands of radiation detectors throughout the city. An additional 1,000 cameras are expected to go online soon. Officials said it is now nearly impossible to walk a block in lower Manhattan without being on surveillance camera. “Nobody has a system like this,” said Jessica Tisch, the NYPD’s director of policy and planning for counterterrorism, as she demonstrated for the show how the department’s computer can watch all the cameras at once and knows if an unattended package has been left in one place for too long. Last year, the system detected a bag someone had dropped outside the New York Stock Exchange. Within minutes, the bomb squad inspected it with an X-ray machine and a bomb tech crawled up to look inside. “And, thank God, it’s someone who dropped their lunch,” Tisch said. Kelly also shared how, after the deadly 2008 hotel attack in Mumbai, India, the NYPD built a video library of the hallways, walkways and doorways of 700 New York hotels. hey heres the bottom line on a .50 anything shooting down an airliner. 1st and foremost you would have to hit the "suck" portion of the turbine. which when standing next to one while boarding an aircraft seems rather large(ie. a man can stand in it), in reality at 5000ftAGL(above ground level) flying at 500+mph, it would be a rather small target to hit. lets consider this a "hail mary" shot.
now when the bullet impacted the "rotating iconal turbine blades" it would be ingested/digested thru the "hot rotating" turbine parts. the iconal blades it hit would obviously come apart and be ingested and continue on thru the entire combuster , which at the tail would start shooting flames and smoke and really small parts just as if it went thru a blender. its basically suck(air), spit(fuel),burn, blow. the engine would stutter, start loosing power, and eventually start taking sheet metal off if not shut down and fire nozzles applied. now thats (1) engine. do ya actually think in yer wildest dreams after drinking a bottle of jack that a sniper could hit the other engine? i dont think so. so the reality is even with a "hail mary" shot into the turbine, the jet will continue to fly on the other engine or engines depending on what config/design it is and they the bad guys would still be able to hit whatever target they wanted. ask me how the hell i know this after spending a very very large majority of my life on a flightline or in a test cell watching my amigos lob frozen turkeys/chickens into turbines at garrett(honeywell) turbines, to see what power level they can maintain after a BIRD STRIKE!

Lets step it up a notch and say they had a stinger at ground zero and they managed to take out the second plane. What's would be the end result of that?
And all those cameras... Orwell was right he just got the year wrong. I must say I'm real happy that I'm now a country boy and I got the travel bug out of the way when I was younger.

There is ambiguity in Kelly's statement.
Aircraft could be anything from a 747 to a Cessna. What are the changes of taking out the windshield of a passenger jet? I imagine it would make it difficult to operate?

well it all comes down to worst case...................! if plane hits building, 1000's may die. if plane is shot out of sky with stinger..............100's may die on the ground when the damn plane finally augers in who in the hell knows where?
its all mathamatical probability and WE are the NUMBERS! kind of like lil stick men! full size jet bad ju ju collateral damage anywhere except in a field/park. a cessna POS....................would be like a car hitting a train.

It seems more like a commentary/insult to the federal govt than to terrorist.
That said, they are saying to terrorist: "I'm mad as Hell and I'm not going to take it any more" along with "Go ahead. Make my day". Good for them.

If their .50-cal "defense system" is ground-based, the only "hits" they'll achieve are in Hoboken. If it's "air based", how do they think they can possibly scramble a chopper and intercept a 7-anything-7 before it hits its target? The speed record for a heli is just under 250 mph, IIRC. A Boeing is barely puttering along at 300. This is just BS grandstanding. As usual.

There is a much better chance of a rogue terrorist using a SAM and taking a commercial aircraft out of the sky than Comm Kelley and the NYPD doing it.
Ain't going to happen. |

I have a 50 BMG and its fun to shoot but it kicks like a mule. I wouldn't even want to think about trying to shoot the thing out of a helicopter

This all assumes NY has the capability in monitoring the skies 24/7 on their own. The aircraft controllers at the airports sure aren't gonna call the NYPD first.

.50 cal bullets worked pretty well in WW2 and ever since this time. Granted it would take a pretty good shot but with someone trained and a bit of luck bet it could happen. I personally sitting in the cockpit would not want to be on the receiving end of a .50...

I'm sure a .50 to a plane wouldn't be good. I think there are several problems with assuming that a 50 cal gun is going to fix something like what happened 9/11.
1 You've got to have enough warning, to get the gun out of the special safe and into not just any spot, but the right spot for it to be effective. 2 As stated by at least 1 other person, I've got to have someone that can hit a plane with it. Not just any plane, but a plane that's far away and moving fast. 3 You've got to hit it in a way that causes it to come down. 4 You've got to get it to come down someplace better than where "they" were going to make it come down etc.... I'm sure the list could get much larger... I guess if it's a really big full auto gatling gun type gun, they'd have a much better chance of hitting a plane and doing enough damage to cause it to come down. What they really need is an A-10. Then, they could take out air and ground targets all over the place. That seems like a MUCH better idea.

I think the commisioner was trying to scare all terrorists by showing their capabilities. I doubt they could take down an airliner but it looks like they could do just about anything else.
I was impressed by the interview. Sounds like a capable person stepped up and did a good job of putting the tools in place to fight terrorism.

Militarization of the police is never a good thing. Good thing they have strict gun control laws in NY so the law abiding sheeple can be better controlled.
