Rating threads with stars poll...

This should probably be a poll (but I've not sure I'm going to do this right), so I'll just throw the question out there. I was reading another thread, and the OP seemed upset that his thread (at the time) had been given a 1 star. I've never rated a thread, nor pay a bit of attention to the stars, but this isn't the first time this has come up. How many of you rate threads, what criteria do you use, and what's the point? Just curious so I thought I'd ask...

Popular threads are always on top or at least the first page, what a better way to see how they rate.

masraum 09-25-2011 07:16 AM

I usually don't rate a thread unless someone has rated it a 1 and I think it should be higher. Then, if I notice, I'll jack it up to a 3 with a 5.

I think I've got a little over 18000 posts. I suspect I've rated less than 50 threads.

The rating stars have no meaning for me, I ignore them except when someone makes a comment about their useage.

Actually, becoming a "one star poster" here is a badge of honor. Some weenie hates conservatives, so he never bothers to read the threads of several of us, he just gives one star. :D

I think it's all them Texans trying to make for Lone Star State threads wherever they go...

944Larry 09-25-2011 08:54 AM

I don't even know how to post a star.

Gogar 09-25-2011 09:04 AM

Most of the time when a thread gets 'rated' it's not even by a real person, it's by another computer somewhere out there trying to spam the board.

That's why you see no thread rating stars for months and then one day every thread will be rated 5 stars or 3 stars or 1 star, etc.

So - yes - get a grip.

PS if there was a way for the board to be altered so that you couldn't rate a thread unless you LOG IN first, the 'spam-thread-rating' would go away.

In 10 years and 14k posts, I've never once noticed the little stars on top of the threads unless some whiner mentions it. Jesus...what is this, Kindergarden?? Rating with stars?

livi 09-25-2011 09:49 AM

I remember rating one thread back in 2006 just to see how it worked. Have not repeated it. Donīt see the point.

RWebb 09-25-2011 12:02 PM

no, but I'm gonna rate this one!

Well, the maroon is back and mighty proud...my thread gots some starz :). Thank you all for your responses, and I just pulled Speeder's out 'cause that's about the way I see it too. I remember Rob (from Canada) getting bent over someone 1 starring a thread some years back and I also remember the thread that Shaun posted where someone went to great lengths to figure out who was and...aw who cares :). When I saw someone mention it again this morning I made my first poll, 'cause I was curious. So a 1 star is actually a "negative" to some folks...I'm going back to kindergarten to learn the rules...or maybe not. Thanks!

Now don't sell yourself short there, Paul. You may have earned it. ;)

this, pretty sure I figured out who that is that does that.

I don't think Chris was right, and that is a pretty funny thread.

my pleasure Scott. I only had a vague recollection of it but was spurred on by Keith's thread here. I had forgotten just how full of awesome that thread was.

Holy crap! That guy has issues!

jyl 09-26-2011 03:44 AM

I missed that thread too, pathetically funny.

I came back to vote in my own poll (I think that's the first time I've ever voted in one too)! I'm still interested in the comments from folks that do "rate polls". Is it based upon how interesting the thread is, a poster you "like", whether you agree with the original post in a thread, or follow up posts? For those who picked option 4, I concur :), but just find it interesting how different people "think".

ps: I rarely go to PARFland, but it truly seems to be a passion for some over there (rating)...I just don't get it at all.
