Actually I don't think vet schools do that anymore. PETA raised too much hell about it.

These were nursing schools. Human nursing schools. It was to teach them how to intubate babies. At least, this was in Upstate NY in the 1970s/1980s. My mother was one of those nurses.

One cat was adopted in 1973. The other in 1999. Neither were "talkers" and neither had much of a meow. The 1973 kitten/cat actually tried to meow, but it would come out "myahhhh"

Wow Red....I had no idea that they used cats for that. Cats are really hard to intubate since their larynx/vocal cords is very sensitive to touch. Once you touch the vocal cords they snap tightly shut and you have to wait til they take a quick breath...and be pretty quick

reg. intubations..
we practiced on manikins first..
then dead folks..( with family permission)
folowed by a few live ones while the Dr stood by..
then you do them on the street / field..

I have seen my wife start IV's on people that I swore had nothing there.

When her mother got her hip fixed, they were messing around, could not get a line, even with a dinky 22ga on a butterfly. They stepped out to find an anesthesiologist to try, she started an 18 ga they would not even try to get that they left on the table. She had it all hooked up when they got back.

Very handy to have someone like her around.

We were chatting with out veterinarian about his mother's stay in the hospital. He said the nurse could not get an IV started on his mom. The vet said if he can start an IV on a fur covered cat leg with less problem.
