sorry gotta ask: do nursing students need to poke/probe each other "clinically?
i was wondering.
i assume they need to find a vein with a needle. are they jabbing holes in each other as guinea pigs? rectal thermometers?? come on! must be one hell of a lab session if they do. i know dental students clean each other's teeth. |
My sisters a Dr.
They had to get naked and examined by each other. |
Dated a nursing student for a bit. And yes they stick each other with needles. I think that other bit they reserve for practicing on needles.
I know here on campus that all pharmacy students get free flu shots administered by the upper classmen learning about innoculations. |
Guessed right again...another Vash threadSmileWavy

Don't ask me about proctology school.

This is a funny thread. Yes in nursing school we did practice IV's on each other, we also did nasogastric tubes too--both were strictly voluntary but everyone did it. We learned physical exam techniques and practiced them too, however everyone kept their clothes on--we guys did take off our shirts. Trust me you would not want to see some of the girls in my class without clothes.
My fiance is finishing residency this year and things were different in her medical school. They actually had people (volunteers) come into lab for them to practice on and didn't stick or examine each other. Both of us learned most of the invasive procedures during clinical where you are taught how to do stuff by a more experienced person, the old see one do one approach. Sorry to disappoint you guys but that is how things are done now. Most nurses learn IV's during the ICU rotations, unconsious people tend not to mind as much as the ones who are awake:D |
When my brother's 2 year old got juvenile diabetes, he was forced over night to learn how to give shots (not IV's). They gave him a grapefruit, then he practiced on me (with saline). They things you do for family...

I met my wife in hospital...do you want to see what I stuck her with?

Yep! When I was a corpsman in the USN, we started IV's on each other, inserted nasogastric (NG) tubes, etc...
|
When they do IV certifications, yes, they start a line or four. First on dummies, then on each other, then on real patients. When my wife did her IV cert several years after nursing school (LPN, did the cert for CEUs) I got volunteered...
|
When I was in medical school we started IVs on each other but that was it. Everything else was done with people who were paid to be "test patients". I never understood the men and women who would allow 10-15 different students to do rectals, pelvics and such on them. They couldn't have been paid much...

Oh you're making me horny-

I graduated from nursing school in 96'. We didn't start IVs on each other but we did give each other flu shots. For our first big test, we had to do a full body assessment on another person in our class. This included a breast exam but nothing else invasive. Female classmates had to volunteer for the male classmates. Yeah, our study sessions were interesting. We had to keep the blinds closed. ;)

In Podiatry we practiced on each other. I am not as bad as I once was, but when on the pointy end of the needle, I get the vaso-vagal response(faint)
We have this injection lab, and everyone wants to see Toby bounce his melon off the floor. At that point, I am about $100G's into it, and more than somewhat concerned, I speak to the nurse who is the OR supervisor, who asks if it happens when I am giving or getting the shot, which I had not really thought about much. "When I am getting the shot." "Dont't worry about it." This si something I would tell someone when perhaps they actually ought to be worrying about it, so I ask her to help me out a bit more, as I am a bit dubious about the "don't worry about it." She explains what is happening to me, fight or flight response, and goes on to tell me I will probably be quite good at giving injections, as I will have more empathy for my patients. Turns out, she was quite right. I have been told by numerous people that I give the most painless injection they ever had. A nurse with 30 years experience turns out to be right, go figure. |
In dental school we did give each other anaesthetic injections. Very light lunch after that one.
Now if you'll just slip on this paper gown the dentist will be right with you. He's very thorough with his exams. :D |
How do you figure I turned out a fluffer..
Just a couple of examples during med school. Gynecology examination practice: Voluntary women were payed to get examined by a long row of med students lining up to poke around like clumsy teenagers on their first date. The professor standing beside watching your technique. " Watch your thumb! That hurts!" Next!" Rectoscope examination on each other was suggested but only a few of us would do it (not yours truly!). |
