I have not played in about a decade. I recently dusted off all my gear and want to get back into it. How can I jumpstart myself back into playing? Any advise to lose my rustyness??

Go look up some songs and get jamming! Practice everyday, even if it's just 5 10 minutes a day.

Whenever I start to lose focus on guitar I try to just pick out something that I can play that sounds decent and learn it. Recently I have been having fun just trying to solo over blues backing tracks. It sounds pretty cool and it helps me to practice my blues scales up and down the neck.

I don't play much but I too am thinking abut buying myself a new set up. I have been playing my acoustic a little lately and one thing I noticed is the internet makes a world of difference.
When I learned songs back in the day, I would grab an eight track or cassette and listen to it (and the other songs on the track with eight track) over and over until I got it - if I ever did. Now you can download the music, the lyrics, four different videos on how to play the song, and four different cover bands playing the song. Apparently they even have software that will slow the song down for you to learn and play along with and the software keeps it in tune. I just think the internet makes it even more enjoyable and accessable - even for someone as hacky as me.... Enjoy

Keep an acoustic out so you're reminded to practice everyday, build the callouses back up. Keep an electric handy so you can play unplugged while watching TV.

Lessons.
Seriously. There's no substitute for 1:1 time with someone who does it professionally. I hit a (very low) plateau about 15 years ago and played at that level until I found the time in my schedule to take a 1/2 hr lesson a week. My playing has improved measurably with every lesson. Without it I'm just noodling around.

caffeine and some good music.
Get a buzz. Crank the tunes. Play along. Seriously, everytime I say to myself "wow, that was some great guitar playing" I am buzzed on caffeine. Have fun. Larry |

i think the best way is to get a looping pedal. create some loops and then play along with em. get creative with the loops or make std progressions. A boss loop station or boomerang, for example, are what i use
before loop pedals, i played along with my records to get my rustyness out, though i havent stopped playing in about 26 years now for more than a few months at a time |

I just got my iRig and use it with my iPad. Pretty amazing sound and has every effect. Also you can play along with songs and adjust their speed. Has anyone here played one of the Fender Custom Shop Relic guitars?

They are the same as the rest of the line. They just leaned too heavy on the buffing wheel and charge more.

First of all welcome back. But since you've been gone for 10 years that amp is no good anymore. Obsolete, they've all been replaced with solid state digitized stuff.
Don't panic though. I'll still give ya $50 fer it just because I collect antiques. I'll PM the address where to send it to. Yeah I know, I'm a giver. ![]() |
