This landed on my bench monday....

Not quite sure what it is yet, but it's a 16 ga, and French I think but I'm not sure yet. I'll start on it later this month. Sure is pretty. This is why I do what I do. Every once in a while you get to do one of these.

I know it's a wall hanger but what a nice piece of shotgun art. The owner wants it as art and not useable, but functional. It was brought home from Germany after WWI by his grandfather. Supposedly found in a haystack in a barn and "liberated". I still think it's French though.

What beautiful scroll work and so much of it.

If it's French, it is probably scratched from being dropped repeatedly though.

I'm in stitches over here! LOL! I'm just wondering if the frenchie handed it over, or was still hiding in the haystack somewhere when it was recovered.

Nice piece, glad to hear you had something unusual come along.

Wow.

To me (untrained eye) it looks to be in good shape. Nothing is broken, the screw heads look original. Engraving and inlays look pretty good. What's your opinion?

(Hey, if it's not too much trouble and the owner is OK with it, could you post pix of the restoration? I'd love to see how this turns out.)

Out of curiosity, but what would it cost to do custom engravings of various animals exploding from shot impact? Totally serious.

It is a common snipe. Also found in Europe. Tasty!

"Liberated" - yes, but found in a hay stack - rrrrrright. No French or German farmer would have been able to afford one of those. But that's history and now it is in your hands. And now you have to show us what you do with the gun!

If it were mine, I'd load a low pressure round of shells and take it snipe hunting.

???

Animals don't explode when you shoot them with a shotgun, unless you are within a few yards. I would say I hope you aren't serious - but you mention you are!? Then I just hope you don't hunt - I am glad when I get a clean kill with minimal damage - game meat and sport should be your motivation, not making animals explode.

Yes it IS in good shape other than the furniture. I don't want to remove the patina but I do want to enhance it. I will start with a good disassembly and cleaning. It is missing the top screw through the wrist so that will be a challenge. I may have to try my hand at engraving the screw head after I make it.. It should go quickly and with little trouble. Yes I will post progress on this thread. I'm also working on a fabulous Schutzen rifle from Henry Schmidt of Supertech. Wait until you guys see THIS one... I'll post it tomorrow.

It has two dents in the barrels..probably from being dropped..I will be removing those as well. I got me a cool tool for doing that.
