"invisible" vs wireless pet fencing
 

Would like to avoid running the wire for invisible fence. Any experiences with wireless fences? Are they reliable? Area is ~150 x 200 ft. If only the Boston Terrier had (a lot) more impulse control, I could just skip this investment.

I just installed one this weekend. Pretty much to keep my Boxer from digging under my stockade fence. No chance to test it yet.

There is training involved.

Just installing it and turning it on may or may not work.

My sister has one and based on her experience we bought one. Works great as long as you do the training. Though our lab has gone off a couple times if the prize is worth the pain.

Big dogs blow through it like it wasn't there.

Hmm. didn't know that. Who makes them?

I'm gonna check this out. Jack is good most of the time, and he has 2 acres to run in but it only takes once. I have given some thought to a shock collar, the one with the remote button. But like I said he's good most of the time.

i got a cattle fence from the local IFA (intermountain farmers association). its been 8 years. i haven't had to turn it on for 7.5 years. if there is somewhere i don't want the dog to be, i just run some of the wire around the area. gigi won't go near it.

Hills and ravines I got. This is W. PA.

I have the wired type, dog blew through it in training mode, but as soon as I cranked it up it's scared sh**less of it. She's a smart border collie, only took a couple of zaps to train her. She knows where it is, she won't go near it even without the collar on.
Wireless won't do a square area.

Mark: Interesting! I'm owned by 2 Blue Heeler girls and have always been skeptical of using one of these due to the prey-driven drive of this bred but if it works for a BC there's some hope! I guess the key is the intelligence, just as with anything else involving behaviour training.

I would still have a hard time trusting it with a fairly busy roadway along the front of my property - if anything ever happened to my girls I don't know what I'd do..:rolleyes:

One thing I forgot is our dog is a long hair and it didn't get zapped at all till we trimmed the fur in the contact area down to about 1/2". You have to find this patch when the dog is standing (not sitting).
Also the dial on the transmitter was set too low when it blew through the fence. This dial doesn't control the zap, rather it makes the border wider when you crank it up. We have it set to about a 20' wide border area.
Training on a leash with warning beeper only, then we put it on low and let her get zapped. Then we just watched her for the first couple of days. This is when she blew though the fence the one only time and we went to max power and a larger border.
Our dog got it right away, some dogs may not and require lots more training.

The other day I took her for a ride to the store and not thinking I took her collar off and stuffed it in my pocket. When the beeper went off she totally flipped out thinking she was going to get zapped.
The freedom our girl has is amazing, she is such a happier dog.

BTW I zapped myself on purpose, fuch!ng thing hurts. I've been zapped by a MSD, the collar is not quite as bad but darn close.

I have no experience with these fences but can attest that an electric collar can enhance dog training remarkably. Just remember that the invisible fence does not keep other dogs out of your yard. So if there is a pack of strays looking for trouble, your dog will get messed up.

Yes! This happened just the other night!
Local dogs and I caught one called the pound and gave the owner an earful when she picked it up. (pound gave her our number)
Farmers around here will shoot and bury your dog if caught chasing their livestock.

If you have a large yard you can use multiple transmitters.

I should have clarified earlier that my sister and I have the wireless. They will only correct for up to 30 seconds though and as I said before, our lab will tough out the 30 seconds if she thinks the prize is worth the pain.
