Unlimited Racing Championship

This could be the coolest thing to happen in motorsport in a long time if they don't figure out a way to screw it up...

UNLIMITED RACING CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES LAUNCHED
2011-09-16

The American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón today announced its association with the Unlimited Racing Championship (URC) as the new “Heritage Series” for the 2012 season and beyond. The URC will feature identically built NuArt CanAm cars reminiscent of the “glory days” of the Canadian-American Challenge Cup (Can-Am) from the 1960-70s.

The NuArt CanAm cars are purpose-built from the ground up and engineered for safety, aerodynamics, driver comfort and speed. These magnificent cars feature spectacular 700+ horsepower, big-block V-8 motors and state-of-the-art aerospace quality components with an emphasis on safety.

“The American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón is thrilled to welcome the Unlimited Racing Championship, which will be joining a number of ALMS events in 2012,” said Scott Atherton, President and CEO of the ALMS. “This ‘Heritage Series’ will provide more variety and a modern day link to the past for our many fans next year. The new initiative establishes a direct connection to the history of sports car racing in North America with the sights and sounds of an era of extreme speed and power – the revolutionary Can-Am Challenge Cup of the 1960s and 70s. The spectacle of these massively powerful racing machines with a bridge to the past of American racing will surely evoke many fond memories for some and attract new fans as well.”

Check out this car that was at Road Atlanta this weekend... it is owned by Hap Sharp's son... many/most here will enjoy the familiarity of the white paint, the no. 65, and the Cox Hobbies decal...

"These powerful sounding engines have a patented electronic injection system that features a fly-by-wire throttle with scalable power and traction control to provide a safe and easy learning curve. This is all contained in a visually correct injection system, which was the key signature piece of the Can-Am cars of yesteryear. The NuArt CanAm also features power steering for driving comfort, a traditional “H” pattern synchromesh gearbox and 12-inch brakes to help reign in the power of the mighty aluminum big block engines. This creates a uniquely challenging and fun driver experience that is reminiscent of the days of unlimited Can-Am racing of decades ago."

Sounds like the "Unlimited Racing" cars require a spec engine.

Power steering? Fly-by-wire?

I saw this on the ALMS broadcast yesterday and I was WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOEEEEE. I love those cars and the sounds, motors, looks are great. If it's IMSA, then it might have a chance. I always thought why not bring those old style CAN-AM cars back in some form and lets start a series, just like the vintage guys did for years. Bring in some money, drivers of some fame, and who knows, we might have ourselves another great ? racing series again. Nothing better to hear than 20 of these coming up the hill at Road America.

Period correct looking injection systems driven by computerized sequential injectors is a favorite amongst the street rodders. This is silly. Either you have Hilborn or you don't.

The biggest problem for cars of that old design is driver position. It's a wonder more heads didn't get sheared off when one car scooped up the one in front. Can you say quick change Hewland right in your face?

Funny thought: the 3 H race car, Hilborn, Hewland and Halibrand. Those were the days, my friend. Stay thirsty.

Electronic injection makes all the sense in the world- not silly at all.
What is silly is 700 hp and syncromesh / angled gears- those boxes will not last. Can am cars had straight cut gears with dog engagement- no clutch needed on the upshifts, and for the good drivers on the downshifts too.
Trying to attract the rich wannabes to racing these insane hp to weight ratio cars? Sure there are some very talented rich drivers out there (look at the front of the field of vintage can am racers) , but they won't want to be rubbing fiberglass with no talent check book wannabes; this is way too dangerous a game

After seeing that video, I would go to any track and watch them race. This has the beginnings of something very special for the casual race fan and the hard core fan at the same time. They sound great, look great, and whoever races them. may the best man win.
