Hmm, most of my dell stuff has easily gone anywhere from 3-5 years with 0 problems, and just ended up getting replaced due to age, not because of issues. I did just have a HD go on a Dell, but it's been running 24x7 for 4 years.

I had two Dells, two HD crashes. I just made the switch to iMac with Time Capsule for back up.

Lemme guess. Western Digital drives.

I know lots of people have them with never an issue.

But in my personal experience they are the only manufacturer that I have ever had problems with the last few years.

Never been let down by Hitachi or Seagate.

My dead drive is a Seagate.

typing this from my andriod.... Dell's suck Edited - Z-man Mine have broke right after warranty. My porsche is more reliable then the dell and that's saying something. I spent a hour with tech support figuring it out; they want somewhere north of 300$ to fix.

How do you guys like your mac-book pro? I'm think i'll be ordering one in the next couple weeks. student pricing and free shipping, can't beat that.

I love my MacBook, but I definitely don't share your Dell sentiment.

How much do you want for your old Dell? Friend of mine is looking for a cheap used laptop and I have an extra hard drive for one... Which model is it?

I only buy Dells but hard drives are a mechanical device that is prone to failure, so I back them up. I've experienced failed hard drives by Seagate, Hitachi and Western Digital but I prefer the 5 year "no hassle" WD warranty on the Caviar Black series.

I have seen them all crash. I have even seen a Macbook with a crashed HDD, no wait that ended up being the controller. Yes even Macbook's break.
I do notice more consumer series notebook hdd crashes than business series. But its probably more about how they are used than the notebook itself.
Notebook hdd's are $50. What is the big deal reload, restore.
You are backing up right? With the price of storage now, your are crazy not to.

Everything uses the same parts in the end on x86 hardware.

Western Digital (31.2%)
Seagate (29.2%)
Hitachi GST (18.1%) (being sold to Western Digital)
Toshiba (10.8%)
Samsung (10.7%) (being sold to Seagate)

That's it really for hard drives.

The HD crashed on my wife's MacBook Pro. Unfortunately, I didn't have Time Machine setup for backups, but I did have a backup of some of her stuff on a DVD backup I made earlier in the year.

Now, I have Time Machine setup, and the other day, Mrs. Z-man overwrote a file, and I was able to recover the original file in seconds, thanks to Time Machine. Great little tool - wish they had something like that for PC's.

It's on Vista/7, Shadow Copies / Restore Previous Version.

Not sure if it's always set up by default or not, I can't remember if I turned it on, or it just was turned on already.

I specifically configure the servers for it, but don't really pay all that much attention to the worksations in most cases.
