Tracking how your credit card got lifted
Got a call today from Discover about some activities on my card that were suspicious. Generally I ignore these but this was different and I called back. Sure enough they were purchases that I did not make for odd amounts. Macy's $.99, Meirer for $480, others for $.99 and couple others below $100. I have never had this occur before and was impressed by Discovery's quickness. I am not responsible for any of these and they are issuing me a new card immediately. I have used this card on-line linked to paypal for years with no issues. I recently had a wheel refinished at a company that required payment over the phone after receiving it. This was the last charge I knew of before the fraudulent ones. I called the company and expressed my concern and basically warned them that I think something is going on there. Was I in the wrong? Although I am not responsible, someone did walk away with $500 since the first fraudulent purchase did go through. In the end, we all pay for this in some way.

It's great that they picked it up so quickly.
However I would have told the credit card company of your suspicions rather than approach the retailer directly. But I give you cred for calling them.

Don't know if your call to that company was helpful but if you talked to the owner i would say it couldn't have hurt.
I had a Citibank card used in Europe for a couple purchases which ended up totaling about 1K. Citibank took care of crediting my account and issuing a new card but I had to fill out a form and make a few calls. All in all it worked out. I've never been to Europe - no idea who grabbed my numbers - I understand it can be done in several ways these days not just from a transaction you make. Discover is the best bank card company to deal with in my experiences though. ![]()

well lets just say this crap happens fast. we were buying parts from local shop here. guy we had working for us was the parts guy there and worked for us at night. now this is a very large motorcycle consortium. not some hole in the wall.
i call in a order for my personal stuff, talk to my guy, use my AMEX. not 24hrs later AMEX calls, and mysteriously MY AMEX IS IN FREEKING VIRGINIA! hmmmmmmm? and i live in az. well AMEX slapped a HOLD on my card, sent me a new one and i went ballistic on our guy and HIS MGR, as they were the last ones to touch the card #. this was late last year or early this year when it happened. we have since let this guy go, and in hindsight, hearing of his previous nefarious lifestyle back in new jersey("its a jersey thang"), a good part of me thinks he quite possibly sent my card # to his buddies back in new jersey and they decided on a road trip, WITH MY CARD! and if that didnt frost my ass, about 2 months ago i get a call from visa. they say i owe them $158 bucks for some coffee from CANADA! once again i live in AZ. and have not been to canada, nor would i EVER BUY COFFEE FROM CANADA! once again HOLD on card, reissue me a new card, and how the hell that happened i havent a clue. so yeah................IT SUCKS and its a giant PITA! but the best part...................is its interstate. and when its interstate, and the charges get big enough....................THE G-MEN GET CALLED!

I should clarify that I didn't call and accuse the business itself of the actions. They are been around for a long time with a good reputation. As every business owner knows, there is always the chance that someone working there doesn't feel the same.

usually if the card #s get lifted ,
the stealer will go to a generic place like a walmart or some other low security type store, ( where the chances of getting caught are lower), and usually in another state and make a few under a dollar purchases to see if the numbers work, IE no card hold is in place , once this has been done then a few major purchases will be done in short order, then the spending spree stops as the flags go up. The CC company computers look for different state spending, and these under a dollar purchases , and the time when they were made, possibly late at night when the risk of capture is lower

My AmEx was compromised a few years ago. My wife and I were in Hawaii and didn't know it until Amex called us.
The thieves had used that small buy / big buy pattern. I can't remember the numbers but it was like: 2.50 gas station 3200 at Walgreens 4500 at Restoration Hardware 800 at Macys etc etc When they sent me the "receipts", they were blank pieces of paper. They told me that usually its a team. That the person at Macy's is in on it and they ring it all up...but block the printer or something. It's almost always a team. Anyway, Amex was great and took care of every penny. I couldn't spend that much at Walgreens if i tried.

I've had mine compromised a few times over the years. My credit union is very good about getting things fixed quickly. The last time it happened, the card was used for an $11 charge to something on the Internet, and then they tried an $5 charge on the internet 2 seconds later. The second charge was blocked by the CU. The first charge went to pending, my CU called when the second got rung up. I told them that both were false, and the first was never submitted for actual payment That was it; it ended there. In the past, I have had much larger charges before the CU caught it. I think about $1500-2000 in plane tickets. I've never had to worry about any of it.

I've only had my CC# used once in that way online. It was one charge for 59 cents that I caught when I checked at my account online. I immediately did a search for the entity that made the charge and came up with red scam flags. Let me CR know immediately. My CR is pretty vigilant. If I make some charges 15 miles apart in the same day, they are on the phone to me immediately. I let them know I don't mind a bit.

I was on vacation in VA with my family durring new years Y2K. A $14 purchase on my debit card failed to go through. Funny since I knew I had a couple grand in the account. I called my bank and they said I was $7K overdrawn and all purchases origionated online from Toronto CN. I assured them it wasn't me and they fixed the account. Just had to sign an affidavit saying it wasn't me charging all the money. I was calm but my wife sure freaked out until it was resolved.

It's good the card companies keep tabs. When he was here, Evren got a call from his card company. It seemed somebody was using his card to buy a lot of tools in the Albany, Oregon Sears store.
