Roofers, Builders, Milt, Question
Anyone know anything about LPTech radiant barrier?
Specifically penetrating the foil with roofing nails? We had a major hail storm back in June and roof shingles needed replacing. House is only 3 years old. Roofers are in the middle of putting my new roof on and I went up into the attic to have a look from underneath. I don't recall the original roofs nails having penetrated the sheathing. The new nails have penetrated by a good 1/4-3/8's. looks like hell and has knocked small chips of sheathing off the back side. Is this normal? Anyone know if this is bad for the radiant barrier? Sent an email to the manufacturer but won't hear till tomorrow so need to satisfy my curiosity.

That is normal. I've never seen nails that didn't penetrate the sheeting.

As long as its water tight, it wouldn't concern me.

OK,
But it looks like they used a frikken gattling nail gun. I went up there last night and then again tonight to check on the ridge vent install. Freaked me out because tonight when I pulled the access door/ladder it rained sheeting chips. It bothers me because the radiant barrier is all broken up.

It would leak because the shingles overlaps the nails or staples. Not wood shingles right?

If you want to make a big stink about it, sue the roofers. Because your heating/cooling bill is going to be .2% higher.
This too shall pass......... |

Sounds normal to me. I want to say we used to use three nails per shingle, but on the coast, it's five.
Staples were allowed at one time, but it's been so long I don' remember if they still allowed. |

I call the LPTech radiant barrier ply "cool ply". A contractor I used missed the rafters when shooting nails through with his gun and punctured the foil in several spots I hate it also, I wish they took the time to figure out where they were trying to nail the ply to the rafters. I eventually got rid of him and finished it myself and it looks great. So far no leaks and that cool ply made my garage about 30degrees cooler in the the middle of the Texas summer.

The nails will be exposed, but if the contractor is making a mess of things at the overhang and you can see it, it's time for a talk.
