From Wolf to Dog on PBS, very well done...
Watch From Wolf to Dog on PBS - WOW! What a great show. very interesting work done in the 50's with Foxes in Russia. Showed how in one generation that took wild foxes and through selective breeding were able to create what was basically a domestic dog! Even the appearance changed. It all had to do with flight and how comfortable they were with the handlers.
The show was done in such a way that it is very easy to understand how a wolf quickly evolved to present day dogs.

Yeah. National Geographic had an excellent article on this in the last year. It's pretty cool now no matter what the animal (canine, bovine, avian, rodent, etc), when they become domesticated their coloring changed.

I agree. It was on 2 weeks ago here and it was full of interesting information. I look at Jack in whole new light now. The part about how they learned to communicate with us was a wow.

One guy thought that it all started because certain wolves just were not spooked enough at dump sites when people came around.
So the responce has a connection to the gene also controlling melanin? So what does that say about people? Oh no, this ain't heading towards PARF hell I hope!

There was another part that they said petting your dog releases the same hormone as women do when breast feeding infants to bond them together. Both you and the dog release the hormone while petting. that totally blew me away.

BTW - I never thought I'd see that study on TV. The connection was at first thought to be a case where 2 genes are located very close to each other on a chromosome and so, an organism with one thing (melanism) also has the other (behavior). But, it was found that really just a single gene is involved, but has to different products b/c of the biochemical pathways diverging -- and it is used in graduate genetics courses as a classic example of that (and of not jumping to conclusions). I enjoyed the TV show also. I just hope not too many people will jump to conclusions re things being settled when they aren't. I see that (and its converse a lot) amongst non-scientists. |

if you really want to get blown away, engage in some heavy petting with a woman who is lactating |
