WWII Photos

Link to about 45 photos from WWII sent to me by my Dad. I don't think I had seen any of these before. Most are from Midway and the Alaskan battles.

My Dad was a naval aviator in the Pacific theater of WWII flying Wildcats and Corsairs - both land and carrier based.

Enjoy.

Some great pictures there. I've only seen maybe 25% of them before.
There's an SBD mixed into that mess on the back end of that heavy cruiser....that was one shot/angle I'd never seen.

Thanks for posting.

Very, very cool! Thank you for sharing. Even when I flew F/A-18s I wish I had flown WWII aircraft during the "real" fighter days.

Where do you live? You should come to a QB meeting with me sometime. These old gents are still around...

Nice photos BTW!

These pics were taken by my Dad over lake Michigan in 1942.He was the an oral surgeon stationed at Glenview NAS before shipping out with the 4th Marines. There were two carriers in Lake Michigan, the Wolverine and the Sable, both in view off Grant Park. These are from slides he took.there are over 200 aircraft on the bottom of the Lake from carrier qualifications from that era in restorable condition. The Naval air museum in Pensicola has a diorama of one plane on the bottom and it is surreal.Great museum by the way.

I liked the pictures of the Big E.

Hard to believe that clunker was the most decorated ship of the 20th century.

I always liked the way her armament upgraded from her launch in 36:
8 × single 5 in/38 cal guns
4 × quad 1.1 in/75 cal guns
24 × .50 caliber machine guns

To her at the end of the war:
8 × 5 in/38 cal
54 × 40 mm Bofors (5×2, 11×4)
32 × 20 mm Oerlikons (16×2)

If you get a chance, read Guadalcanal Diaries. It is a classic first hand account of life in the WWII pacific theatre
