The Hatchback

is back!

The above is an Audi A-7.

Porsche always wanted to make the 911 a hatchback, but the reduction in structural integrity always stymied them (up until the 996 Targa, IIRC).

Less dowdy looking than a station wagon, and even easier to just drop your luggage or gym bag down into the rear cargo compartment, the hatch -- and its variant, the "hot hatch" -- has always had a lot of utilitarian appeal, hence this thread.

The Ford Pinto was very popular. My best friend in high school had a blue one. Luckily, he never got rear ended when driving it...

I'm happy to see hatchbacks are coming back to the US, but....

I had one that was by far the best combination of utility, economy and performance I ever owned. And I miss it. A lot.

Huge cargo area, excellent fuel economy & great range (if you stay off the boost), very entertaining performance (on boost), and good creature comforts (leather, sunroof, high-end audio, lots of leg room, etc.).

Yes, the manual shifter was a bit less than precise, and the boost came on kind of sudden-like, but that just added to its character.

19 around town and 25 on the road, but who knows what it really is, the speedometer is off a little. I don't know about the oddometer. I need to get the GPS in it and check.

My current everyday car...Renault Sport Clio 200 Cup, Brembo's, Recaro's, naturally aspirated 2.0 - 200hp, this thing gives 997 GT3's a hurry on tight roads/tracks.
Awesome car!

Yep, I've been a member for years, but just started posting on the Z3 board.

In high school, two buddies of mine had identical purple Gremlins. One had a really nice gf whose parents didn't care for him, so he always used to just honk when he arrived and she'd run out and jump in the car. Once, the other guy pulled up and honked and she ran out, hopped in and he started off down the street - she had a fit when she realized it was the wrong car/guy!

My current everyday car is a 89 944S2, TURBO BRAKES & SUSPENSION, FACTORY SEATS, Dansk exhaust, naturally aspirated 3.0 @ 207hp, this thing gives 997 GT's a hurry on tight roads/tracks and probably would to a ...Renault Sport Clio 200 Cup as well!
