Siri

so, how good is it?

porsche4life 10-24-2011 04:10 PM

It works pretty well. I have some issues with it because the yelp database isn't very good in my area. but the text-to-speech is very good I haven't had to correct this at all. I really have to work on and enunciating better I sort of have a southern drawl apparently

I find the voice recognition quite good for normal phrases. You can't be a slurry drawler.

For proper names and uncommon terms, they need to implement speak & spell. So if I say "Webb capital w e b b is a pelican capital p e l i c a n" it should understand that I'm spelling Webb and Pelican. Seems feasible.

Also some funny quirks.

"what is 294 divided by 13.5" gives 294/13, it doesn't recognize the decimal.

"tell my son I'll pick him up at four thirty" produces a text message to my son "I'll pick him up at 4:30", but "tell my son I'll pick you up at four thirty" produces the text message "I'll pick you up at 4:30". Seems easy enough to handle both forms.

"set a timer for twenty five minutes" creates just that. "Set a timer for the pie in 25 minutes" creates a web search for pie. "Remind me about the pie in 25 minutes" creates a reminder in 25 minutes for the pie.

"remind me to check the tire pressure tomorrow" creates a reminder at 9 am. Not sure where it gets that time. I have to say "make that 4 pm", which it does.

Stuff like that. I'd call it a 8 of 10 for a first version. Definitely like having it. I still don't know how to use it more than 10%.

Yes, I think the more you use it and learn it, the easier it will get and the more you will like it.

Like I said, it may improve my speech some too. Forcing me to speak proper english yet. I haven't thrown a y'all at it yet. I'm curious to see how it copes.

Pretty impressive. I am a lazy talker and Siri understands me. Hats off!

interesting -- is Siri in the cloud?

or will Siri do its thing (her thing?) when you are off the grid?

also, does Siri learn? that might love jyl's and P4life's issues...

jyl 10-24-2011 06:58 PM

Siri is in the cloud. It does not work if you do not have an Internet connection. I am not sure if it learns. This was dictated, using another iPhone feature.
