I had dinner last night with Chris Waddell...parapalegic olympic skier and...

...first parapalegic to summit mt Kilamanjaro under his own power. Truly a nice, humble and inspiring atlete.

Thanks for posting that, Jim. I already feel stronger, less whiny and more inspired to take on my current obstacles of life.

Kinda odd how my encounter with him occurred....A lady friend needed an escort to a small charity cocktail party/dinner that capped the end to a bike ride fundraiser. About 40 people were there. A chair next to me was unoccuppied and this unassuming, affable guy comes in in a chair and asks if I minded him joining our table. I had no clue who he was. It was his first visit to mississippi and we were talking about his reaction, etc. Over dinner a full length documentary was being shown. It wasn't until halfway thru it was I realized it was about him and the Mt Kilamanjaro summit. Me being the gear head then talked about the construction of his 4 wheekl mountain bike. Constructed of mild steel, 27 speed, weighs 55 lbs, RWD live axle. Equpped with a hand cranked winch to pull him over obstacles that could not be driven over. We talked about obstacles in his life post accident (1988 in a skiing accident)...he said the physical was the easiest part...its the mental side that was most difficult to overcome. I asked what his next challenge was. Answer: "Finish my book I've been working on for 10 years." Truly a triumph of the human spiriit.
