The owners, an older couple were on a world wide trip.

I think you need a lot more $$ for an old one than a new one. As much as I love 300SL Gullwings, (who doesn't), you're talking about two completely different things as a usable DD in 2011.
FWIW, I know a couple people with new ones and they're definitely not worrying about the depreciation or how much it cost. That's lunch $$ to a half-billionaire.

It seems the older ones go from 550 to 800k, more for the aluminum bodies.
Like you say, the guys I see driving them, any of them, have more cars, this is just another toy.

I know i will be flamed and hung, but the new one is butt ugly. Yes it is. Terrible dishonor to the original. no originality or common sense to the new style.

Front end I am thinking Nissan, the back end is very RX8-ish. I like the new one as a car itself, as an MB, not so much.

That's the thing. A Benz always looked like a Benz. You could never confuse them with anything else.
But it's not entirely their fault. I've seen some newer big Hyundai's that look like a older MBs.

Years ago, a local radio station sponsored a cruise-in. The Deejay asked me if I could bring my '72S and perhaps a few more P-cars to give the show a touch of european...so, I made a couple of calls.

Friend Mick showed with his 914 2.0, and I hoped that friend Lee would bring his '58 speedster.

Instead, Lee showed with his '56 Gullwing...ALL original, even to the paint. Fitted liggage, Rudge knockoffs, the whole bit.

Did the hot rod crowd react badly? To the contrary...the Gullwing won several trophies, including people's choice.

I have been lucky enough to see this car around a few times, it's a beautiful car that he drives.
There are a couple others that show up occasionally at the Dana Point Starbucks on Saturdays.
