Aurora AFX = Fun!

Picked these up cheap. No cars, but lots of track. Used to race them a lot as a kid. Maybe have to set up a track around the Xmas tree this year. Now to find some cars, they're usually pilfered and sold separate from the sets. They can get expensive. Didn't know if any other Pelicans messed with slot cars...

i had an AFX track and cars back when i was about 4-6yo. i loved it. i had a couple of really really nice aftermarket cars to go with the track, along with the cars it came from. i'd love to have that track again. i plan on getting some track and cars together for my son. i am going to set it up, semi-permanently, in our spare room.

porsche4life 11-01-2011 01:08 PM

I have a a tyco track that takes up like 4ftx8ft all set up. Freaking awesome. But one of the controllers is dead. :(

Racerbvd 11-01-2011 01:16 PM

I have a 914 for that track:D

Oh Haha 11-01-2011 02:59 PM

This may be the earliest memory to the start of my motorheadery....

Or is that gearheadism?

Oh Haha 11-01-2011 04:20 PM

My blue one is a Ferrari, right?

This is the place I got them- www.carsantiquesandmore.com.

It's a mile from where my wife works so don't be shy if you see something you want picked up. :)

I've been collecting these for years ... very easy to get addicted :) I'll find some pics of my collection and post them later.

Where did you find the Pink Pig ? I've never seen one of those in this scale before.

nota 11-01-2011 05:19 PM

I started with the vibration cars in 62 all fords at first
then the dc motor Aurora "Thunderjet-500" HO chassis way before AFX
briefly had 1/32 cars and tracks
then the commercial 1/24 scale tracks began to pop up everywhere
and I spent way too much time and cash on them
even got to the team and sponsor level racing for cash
then poof it was gone

Tons of H.O. cars on ebay... HO Scale | eBay

Or you can visit your local hobby shop and get some right off the rack.

dewolf 11-02-2011 12:05 AM

AFX used to have semi's as well. Much fun...

Eric 951 11-02-2011 04:22 AM

Very nice. I picked up the AFX "Pit Row Special" set at an estate sale a couple months ago for 5 bucks. I found cars at the local hobby shop--they ran about 15.00 each--picked up a 71 GTX, 55 Nomad, 64 Super stock, and 71 Blazer--fun to monkey around with.

DaveE 11-02-2011 05:10 AM

I used to have a couple old McClarens and a 904.

I can still smell that oil:)

rsrguy 11-02-2011 09:24 AM

I've been slowly getting back into this mini addiction now for a year or two now, funny it shows up here. I guess it's a natural though. The level of detail in the newest super g cars is amazing. I'm actually working towards a 4 lane layout in my work shop.

sure tracks/shops sponsored local teams to race other track/shops
local biz got into it too mostly kids dads biz [ my level]
and most of the major kit and motor or parts makers ran national level teams
to promote their products at state or national races
those guys got paid in addition to expenses like airfair hotels and tons of free parts

locals got t-shirts caps and entry fees paid or paid upgrade parts sometimes

Back in the 60's [man, I must be an old fart] a friend and I combined our Strombecker sets. The cars were 1/32 scale, and they had skinny hard tires just like the real cars of the era and you could drift them thru the curves. Later on came the 1/24 cars with super fast motors and wide gimball tires. The hobby shop where i lived had a big custom made track. We were there all summer, or until we could by a real car and take out girls.

strupgolf 11-02-2011 07:12 PM

The man who started Strombecker lived down our street when I was about 8-9 yrs old. I got one of the first figure 8 sets to try out and loved it. It was so small and I can't recall the cars; maybe a Jag and Corvette. Then because of size, I went to HO and loved it. I've been buying up lots of track over the years and now have enought to build 10 layouts. I'm planning on building a 4x8 layout for the grandkids this winter. The above video shows a HO layout? Man, those cars are lots faster than the ones I ever had.

Thread revival. Memories- In the 1960's, rainy Saturdays we would bring our shoebox of cars, controller, related and race at a local hobby shop.

Fun pulling them out of their box and thinking about sharing some rides in my SC with Don in his last months, he was loving it.

Cheers Richard

Those are "wing cars." Souless wedges with tall rear spoilers and side dams.

I have no idea why anyone would want to race a blur. It's pretty much just full throttle most of the way with a few "lifts" ...and aerodynamics holding it in the slot.

Wow those things are wild. "race a blur" sums it up perfectly. Crazy.

Amazing collection Doug E, do you have a nice track set up at home?

Cheers Richard
