Motorcycling through southern UT now.
I rode up to Blanding from home today. I need to burn some vacation days and am taking Mon. and Tues. off. I went through Monument Valley today when the sun was not in a great spot for photos. And there was just about no one around to take photos of me. So it's just the bike and the rock formations.
![]() Riding through Navajo Nation is very depressing. Tuba City and Kayenta are the two of what passes for towns in the part of NN we call Arizona. Those folks could pass for poor people in other countries. It's sad and depressing. At one gas station I stopped at between those two cities, with about 75 miles of absolutely nothing between them, there were barefoot kids and four stray dogs sunning themselves on the asphalt. The last white man I saw was at a gas station just outside Flagstaff and then tonight when I went to get beer at a gas station outside of Blanding (a dry town). In NN trailers are the nice houses and there are plenty of plywood shanties that look like little more than dog pens. Man, it sucks there. Anyway, off to Moab and Arches tomorrow, then back roads to Cedar City and back home through Zion with a stop in Colorado City to pick up another wife or two. More photos coming.

Can't do Canyon de Chelly this time. I'm not backtracking at all until I get southeast of Colorado City and am then headed straight home. However, I do want to make a trip out to Shiprock and Four Corners one of these days, so Canyon de Chelly would be nearby then.
Why does my photo look like hell? It's a link from my photo page and it's uploaded just the same all my other previous ones that looked clear. It's 30 deg. cooler here than at home. Winter gear going on in the morning.

I hope you have a Tony Hillerman novel or two along with you! Always important to read books appropriate to the landscape....

Very cool! I stomped all around AZ as a kid. My Dad had a friend who had lived there since it was a territory. He showed us many backwater places of beauty.

my mom worked for the hospital in tuba city in the 80s. spent a few summers there. i have never seen comparable 10 am drunks anywhere else. it was like living in the dorms the week after finals every time the checks came in.
nice small town otherwise.

Ok, still uploading my hi-res. photos with a very slow Internet connection, but will post them after I find dinner.
The day started off at a balmy 36 deg., but almost didn't because my battery isn't used to the cold. I barely got her going this morning. Now I'm in Moab, which is the powersport capital of the US. So it was no problem finding a car parts place open until 7pm on a Sunday that had a new battery for me. They're filling it with acid and charging it now and I'll go get it and install it on the way to dinner. While my hi-res. photos are uploading, I wanted to share this one I took with my iPhone for my legion of haters. Yes, another d'bag needs two parking spaces, this time a truck with TX plates in Arches Nat. Park. Flame away. I know I'm a bad guy. ![]()

I promise more to come, but it took almost an hour to get five photos uploaded and they weren't even the good ones. This is the first one I took at Arches Nat. Park today.
