"Don't mess wit my candy."

SC 10-year-old pulls gun after candy theft joke
The Associated Press

AIKEN, S.C. — South Carolina officials say a 10-year-old trick-or-treater pulled a handgun on a woman who joked that she'd steal his Halloween candy.

The Augusta Chronicle reported Tuesday ( Aiken trick-or-treater, 10, pulls gun | The Augusta Chronicle) a 28-year-old woman told authorities she recognized some youngsters Monday evening and she joked she'd take their candy.

Aiken Public Safety Lt. David Turno says a 10-year-old in the group said "no" and pointed the handgun at her.

Turno says the gun wasn't loaded but the boy had a clip of ammunition. He was taken to the police station and was turned over to his parents.

Turno said the boy's brother, who is also 10, told officials he also had a gun and both weapons were recovered by police. Turno says the boys got them from their grandfather without his permission.

Aside from the without permission part, kudos to the kids for protecting themselves. Also Kudos for not trying to shoot after the situation backed down.

Stealing is wrong, adults should know that, and threatening to steal from little kids is wrong to.

Unfortunately, grandpa is probably in deep do-do.

Kudos for a friggin' ten year old that steals a gun from his grandfather and threatens an adult who made a friggin' joke about taking the kid's candy?????

Kudos for a ten year old thief that does not know the difference between a joke and a threat??

What if had fired and killed someone?
Kudos again???
Do you even understand the gravity of the situation?
You probably think that if the woman got shot in the face, she would have deserved it...

He didn't fire and kill someone.

And What if it had been a pedo wanting to rape him? Do you even understand the gravity of the situation? If the kids had of been attacked, they would of been justified in loading and shooting. As it is, it wasn't a real threat, and no one got shot. You have to look at the outcome. Kid was safe.

The guns may have been part of the costume, but I don't know. Same with the magazines.

And how do we know the kid wasn't joking? How do we know the lady wasn't joking? If I'm on a plane and I tell another passenger I'm going to rob him, I'm probably in trouble... Some things are better not joked about, and joking about robbing a kid at night in the dark is one of them. Some kids run into people that threaten stuff, and aren't joking. The kid responded to threatened violence, with threatened defense. I don't see what is wrong with the kid pulling a gun when he could of been assaulted. His supposedly having the gun without permission, which is a separate incident, was wrong.

Of course. That explains it.

C'mon, let's be honest. Who amongst us hasn't sent their 10 year old out on Halloween with a real gun as part of their costume? With their 10 year old brother carrying live ammo as part of his costume?

Can't see how anything can go wrong there. Seems totally reasonable. It's part of the costume, for pete's sake. The costume!

Sumthin fishy....brother, also ten......doan they call them twins? Or was dadz doing a pair of cousins or sumthin?

There's nothing but very bad behavior on everyone's part in this story. Those kids' parents and grandfather need a serious talking to and those kids need some good rump rash too. When I was 10 yrs. old, the thought of even touching a gun without my dad's permission and supervision never entered my mind. I knew how to handle, field strip, clean, you name it, knew how to run the reloading equipment too. I would never have even thought of doing such a thing and wouldn't have pointed even a toy gun at someone either.

stomachmonkey 11-02-2011 08:02 AM

Why were these 10 yr olds out trick or treating unsupervised?

I live in a very safe closed community where everyone knows each other and my kids were accompanied by an adult as was every kid that came to my door.

vash 11-02-2011 08:09 AM

that kid will be my next craigslist sales wingman. safety first and second..maybe third.

McLovin 11-02-2011 08:51 AM

This shows what happens when kids aren't taught early how to secure the perimeter.

You are absolutely correct. This is what makes a perfect ghetto. I live with them on all sides of me and damned if I don't expect those 10 YO's to defend themselves.

Those 2 boys will be dead before they reach 16.

Clearly his brother was not covering his sector of fire and situational awareness was low on both their parts, otherwise the bogey wouldn't have been able to engage the boy.

Just flat out bad parenting...
