Andy Rooney, RIP

What can you say about this guy? He didn't pull any punches and he was also one of the "greatest generation", gone.

Sad.

And that's another thing. I mean, why do so many men die right after their retirement ? I mean it's not like they couldn't have died before. Maybe they were just afraid they would be late for work, or perhaps they just didn't want to do all those things they were meaning to get around to...

RIP Andy. Enjoy the view.

I still haven't made up my mind as to whether I like the guy or not. I guess he doesn't care about what I think anyway...

I hear what you're saying, my father fell apart after he retired.

But Rooney was 92.

RIP.

I liked him because he said what he wanted to say, not what he thought you wanted to hear. There are too few people like that any more. Everyone today is kissing up to one group or another. Your neighbor will tell you he likes your grass or you car when he really doesn't. I'm guessing that if Andy didn't like you as a neighbor or didn't like you partying until 3 AM Sat morning, he would have told you.

He was very successful so didn't have to work until he was 92 but he did, he had a great work ethic and enjoyed what he did. I'm guessing he slept soundly every night until the last breath.

I liked him and watched regularly on 60 Minutes. He was a highlight. The funny thing is that my impression of him was always better in anticipation than actually watching. How is it that you perpetually hold someone's performance in higher regard than is demonstrated?

I think this reflects his truth and character. He was a normal person who told it like it is. I like that. I will miss you Andy.

From what I've heard from people that have worked with him, his cranky, confused, curmudgeon television persona was only scratching the surface of how horrible he actually was.

Will miss him. Did not always agree but he was one of the Greatest Generation and I respect him for that.

RIP Andy

From what I read, he was crotchety most of his life. The difference is, he made a living at it.

I will miss his "voice" in more ways than one. Guess where he is now, he knows "the rest of the story."

RIP Andy Rooney.

I watched his final 60 Minutes piece a few weeks ago and when he said, "This is a moment I've dreaded" it really struck me. All these years in the news business, 92 years of life, and it was all coming to an end. He knew his mortality could no longer be put out of his mind as something far off in the future and it came across in his final words that Sunday night. Like him or not, he was of an era of seriousness and professionalism and proper adult comportment that is sadly disappearing in today's mega-corporate media and shameless cultural environment. Think of all the male adults in your past, the dads and uncles you looked up to when you were a kid, and then look around at most of the dolts we see these days, especially on television. Men of Rooney's time survived the Great Depression, global war, the Cold War and they did it with serious comportment and a sound moral compass. If they had tattoos it was because they earned them as Seabees or in combat in war zones when they were 20 and they had them out of sight under their shirtsleeves. They wore coats and ties more than they wore 'casual' clothes. They could dance with a woman easily and they knew how to entertain their friends. Dinner parties, cocktails beforehand, good conversation, rules of behavior that were unwritten but well understood. There were things you just did not do. There were things you just did not say in public. There were aspects of your life that were private and not meant to be aired-out in front of other people. We have lost so much of that in recent decades and you could hear it in some of Rooney's comments on 60 Minutes and in his writing. One of the things I say along these lines is, "I miss adults." My parents are both gone, as are most of my aunts and uncles, role models all, and I look around and I don't see them being replaced by serious adults. I shudder to think of who CBS replaces Rooney with at the end of 60 Minutes. Farewell Mr. Rooney and THANK YOU.

I always admired his ability to call them like he saw them.
A little history: he was completely against all war until he was a reporter for the Stars & Stripes when he went to France and saw what the Nazi forces were doing and it totally changed his mind.

He will certainly be missed by this family. We always looked forward to the end of 60 minutes and being able to see Andy at the end of the show.
WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) That was Andy.
Rest well sir!

When he stated he didn't know who most of the young people making headlines, I knew he was worthless.

How can you work in the news industry and not know who people like Zuckerberg and Timberlake are?

Like him or hate him, I don't think anyone will disagree those couple minutes of airtime he used on 60 Minutes were pure filler...Couldn't you just give me a minute of beauty shots of nature as a bump?

PS - I figured he would retire on the same terms as Steve Jobs...
