I've had every opportunity to visit his collection. That's probably about 5 miles from home. I regret never going. It's unreal the stuff they're pulling out of those buildings. There are three cars in that collection that are going to fetch big bucks, not to mention all of those pre 1920 motorcycles.

Wayne Carini was there filming for an episode of Chasing Classic Cars. Should be interesting to see what that reveals.

I can't watch the videos while at work, but that place is amazing. It would have been great to be able to visit before the old fella passed.

I drove by that yesterday while going to lunch (work a mile from there) and wondered what was going on. A quick Google search later and shazam, I found it. I seem to remember a short thread (here maybe) about a pretty cool muscle car tucked away in a weedy area in Glenview and I always wondered where the hell that was since Glenview is a pretty nice area. Now I know where.... And I always wondered what was down that dirt drive. Pretty cool. And to think that I have been driving by that spot for more than seven years and never knew...

Incredible early motorcycles, some are 100% original. As for the bicycles he collected, most were acquired as toss aways.... now some worth a few thou each. For those into early Ford T, rare accessories including vintage OHV RaJo and Frontenec heads. Then there is that godawful bodied BMW sportscar with the Harley Earl influence styling?? Nice Fall weather for the event. Scott

So what did this Lee guy do to finance such a massive collection?
Or did he simply spend "old money"?

In a nutshell he bought and sold cars and motorcycles to the people stationed at Glenview NAS which used to be right down the street. He kept the good stuff. He had a junk haul away business for years starting back in the 40's. He acquired a lot that way too.

The auction site has been updated with the final sales prices for everything. A surprise to me is how much some of the license plate lots went for, $20K-$30K.

The Lee Roy Hartung Collection - Auctions America

Some notable items:

1911 Flying Merkel - $201,250

1912 Harley Davidson - $115,000

1911 pope Model H - $83,375

1949 BMW Veritas - $195,500

1950 Edwards R-26 Roadster - $143,750

I grew up in Glenview and I had no idea it was there. But then again, that was a long time ago when he probably had on cycle and one plate.

I attended a similar auction last month in Oklahoma. Unfortunately the 'old guy' kept the majority of his collection outdoors and exposed to the elements.

Over five hundred bidders and they were also taking bids online and over the phone.

This 1959 Caddy, 2-door convertible sold to someone in New York (phone bid) for
$18,800.

This rare 1935 Ford Roadster went for $25,500. (also a phone bid)

I went, hoping to find something for a "rat rod" project. I've had a 302 smallblock Chevy and Borg Warner Super T-10 sitting in my garage for almost thirty years now ...they need to 'spin' again.

I had my eye on this 1954 Studebaker Commander Coupe.

It was rougher than the online photos of the auction indicated - so I passed. It sold for $3,300.

thus, the search continues....

Another remarkable pile - barns full - plural, acres full including a packed house with a Ford A in the living room is Elmer's in Minn. The vintage toys, kiddie ride ons, bicycles, early cars and muscle cars resting with deflated tires - door handle to door handle. Hundreds of them, Hemi's to a few 911's. Seen both places and Elmers is actually organized chaos and really neat to see.

I just found the link on Elmer. Looks like he's now an old pro on presenting junk - cleaned up and cars now have air in those tires. http://www.elmersautoandtoymuseum.com
