"army issued colt" what does that mean?

had dinner with my MIL last night. she invited a slew of her elderly lady friends.

one lady told me she just gave away her late husband's hardware..some brand new, with paperwork, army issue colt. what is that..some 1911? she also gave away three of his rifles.

i almost lost my appetite. i had my iPhone out ready to pull up some pictures with a "did they look like this?"..but my wife quashed it. the lady also said, "well, if i knew you were interested in guns, i could have probably given you one of them..."

speculate with me friends. lady is in her 60's. i am not familiar enough with military hardware to even begin to guess.

lets get something clear right now.................."army issued" means that. the freeking ARMY ISSUED that to the GI's(government issue). its the GOVERNMENTS PROPERTY and they really really REALLY like THEIR PROPERTY BACK IN GOOD SHAPE! actually THEY DEMAND IT BACK or its the GI's AZZ! they are very nasty about this and very nasty about war booty coming back into the u.s.aka captured weapons from bad guys.

all it means is that it probably was sold out of DCM surplus onto the civilian market.

the SMARTEST way on any private purchase or gift i make or take, is to take serial numbers down upon inspection and then call the local cop shop and have them run the numbers to see if STOLEN!

having a STOLEN WEAPON in POSS. is just plain azz BAD JU JU!

ask us how we know this here in the VORTEX OF LEGAL FIREARMS?

p.s. about the only TRUE war booty weapons that DID make it back were from europe and the pacific.

aka walthers(we overan the factory) and it was a heyday with GI's putting their own walthers together from parts on the shelf. lugers/nambus/arisaka's/mausers etc.

as for m-16's from nam???????? give me a break. their freeking CLASS 3's(full autos) and the gubermint just crushes them or melts them down.

m-14's were demilled to semi before ever making it to DCM surplus. same with m-1 carbines. all had to be demilled to semi auto before ever leaving a military armory.

Well maybe not....when you make brigadier general, the military issues you a personal sidearm which I believe means they keep it. I don't have all the regs and memo's, but that's what I've been told. Anyone else???

Your all hung up about it being a military ISSUE weapon. On the box of every standard Colt 1911A1 it says "GOVERNMENT MODEL"..so some poor old lady got confused about what that really meant.
Now the question is exactly what era of Colt 1911A1 was it? Prewar NIB...4K, Post War to 1970 basically 1500, Series 70 900 @, Series 80...$750 @..Caliber would make a dif..38 Super adds a premium.

I think that clears that up nicely..

a mil-spec essentially means =cheap azz production and more paperwork following it than gawd has trees on the planet. dont fool yerself.

take a look at a beretta model 92 and then a beretta M-9(mil spec.) usgi issue.

milspec must be mfg'd in the u.s.

my model 92FS(post slide breakage) was produced in ITALY and the machine surfaces are WAYYYYY MO BETTERER than a military issue, no ifs and or butts.

do you think any of the weapons used in whacking osama bin bun feeker were just "ISSUED"...............NO I DONT THINK SO! those damn seal weapons were all BALANCED AND BLUEPRINTED so they GO BANG EVERY STINKING TIME NO MATTER WHAT CONDITIONS unlike basic GI GRUNT ISSUE weapons.

You guys are sharp, and I pretty much take what you say as the Gospel, but weren't M-1 Carbines semi and the M-2's full auto?

If I had a nickel for every time that somebody told me about something that they threw out or gave away that I would have loved to have, I'd be rich...

Freebies.......

My brother in law got a call from his wife's aunt one night. She had a couple of guns that had belonged to her husband (deceased) and she didn't want them around the house any longer. So the BIL goes by and is given the two guns. It turns out that one is a single barrel shotgun of some sort but the other is a pre war Colt 1911 .38 super Gold Cup pistol! Turns out it was made in the late 20s or early 30s. Probably about $2k+ worth of iron!

The guns that have been given to me are priceless (to me) because of who gave them to me. Once in a very great while someone will get an old gun in a situation like this and I'm always happy for them. I just hate to hear about the ones that "got away"...
