Hey Mudman,
If you want some damn fine ramen, really close to where your staying try this place! Daikokuya - Downtown - Los Angeles, CA . It's right in Little Tokyo, very close to you. Be prepared to wait in a loooong line on a Friday night though. Have fun, Michael

Go here. Official Site: Griffith Observatory Los Angeles, CA If you are not into that kind of stuff, have a look at the city from there. There are a bunch of hiking trails going both south from there or up to the highest point in the city of LA. IF you see the pic in the link, just turn around and look at the peak. Follow the path at the end of the parking lot and keep going up. You will get to the top of Mt Hollywood in about 1/2 hour. Its worth it. You see all of the LA basin, see the ocean on a clear day ( the day right after it rains is the most beautiful day in LA). Drive down Mullholland drive. If you go, turn into the Torreyson Drive and have a look at Lautner's Chemosphere (40 second drive off Mullholland), 60's modern architecture. You can't miss it. it is really something to see up close. You can't get up to the house, but really close enough to have a look a the stem of the mushroom. We spend hours in there restoring and building the interior, mostly wood work. See it only if you are up for the drive on Mullholland, if not it may not be worth your time just to go see Chemosphere. You can't even get in.

Being DT w/o a car is tough for seeing the sights, Pasadena was actually a good suggestion because the 110 freeway goes right thru DT and right to Pasadena pretty quickly. The other places mentioned are good but the Getty is not close to DT, either as the crow flies or in driving time.
I'm working down in Venice right now and can't believe how bad west side traffic is...it's just another world from Hollywood or where I live. Mind blowing. Took me 1.5 hours to get from Venice to Westwood, (UCLA), @ 7 PM Thurs. night. Then west of the 405 on Sunset, nothing!! 50 mph w/ 3 cars per block on the road! I don't know WTF is going on down there but you could not pay me enough to live/work on the west side. Sorry for that rant. You can PM me and I'll scoop you up some time if you're around for a few more days, I'm working all day and busy tonight but things should lighten-up in a day or two. I live not too far from DT. |

Westside is fine depending on where/when you have to travel. If you are trying to head east M-Th night, forget it. It routinely takes me minimum a half hour to travel about 2 miles. But that is if you are stuck taking either the 10 or Pico/Olympic/SM/Wilshire/Sunset. Further south there are some better ways but when I have rehearsal in the valley with 7pm downbeat I leave the westside by 5:30 so that I can make it on time. Once or twice a month I can deal with it. If I had to do it every day, I'd move... I live in SM, work in Playa Vista. 15 min surface street commute. As for downtown, check out the Edison bar. |

The traffic in my neigjhborhood or most of Hollywood/WeHo does not even vaguely resemble that of the west side. I agree that it's OK over there if you stay in the area. Gone are the days when you can be in several disparate areas of L.A. In the same day. At least not if one of them is on the west side.
BTW, where were all those people trying to go on Thu nite @ 7pm?? It was like trying to get out of Saigon. |
