Ferrari pileup, Japan

Video - Expensive smash on Japan highway - The Sydney Morning Herald

Quote:
A Sunday drive has ended in a $3 million nightmare, with eight Ferraris, three Mercedes-Benzes and a Lamborghini involved in a 14-car pile-up in Japan.

Police said the pile-up happened on the Chugoku Expressway in Yamaguchi Prefecture about 10.15am yesterday, with 10 people hospitalised with minor injuries.

Japan's largest English language newspaper, The Daily Yomiuri, reported the crash happened on a curve of the road and one Mercedes-Benz was driving in the oncoming lane.

ANN news video of the crash aftermath shows the sportscars lying mangled on the road, a mess of ripped metal, broken glass and snapped alloy wheels, with several cars wedged up against metal barriers.

About $3 million worth of supercars and luxury coupes from the 1980s to today - and a Toyota Prius - were damaged in the crash.

According to a translated report from the Asahi Shimbun the smash occurred when one of the Ferraris hit a median strip.
ouch!

I won't say it.

Too bad there's no translation on the newscast, that'd probably be more entertaining.

I'm also wondering what car #14 was. If you add up the totals (and perhaps I'm doing this wrong), I only count 13 cars listed. ???

Please do... I have no idea what you're implying, but it probably needs to be said.

"...the smash occurred when one of the Ferraris hit a median strip."

Median strip?

Is that another way of saying guard rail?

Hey you! Stop giggling at the back!
___
Not the Prius!!
___
Are you sure this wasn't a Top Gear stunt?
___
Life in the fast lane, eh?
___
Since when has a Prius been a "Luxury Car" ?
___
Car sales which don't include driving lessons, basics like not getting too close to the car in front, don't drive like a hoon, keep the insurance payments up to date, try not to be a show off. Have we now all learnt our lessons?
___
The Prius was probably doing 80 in the right lane like they do here...
___
Pick the odd one out...The prius, the guardrail or the supercars...

You guessed right. The guardrail moved at the same speed as the supercars and the prius was the slowest item on the road. (other than white painted lines).

Caused by a Benz. Who would have guessed. Just like a F1 race.

Methinks YugiOh and his mates were driving a little too fast. Probably caused by the prius - Indirectly,. Since it was red the other drivers were embarrased to be seen near it and were accelerating away. Funny - All possess the fastest brakes and none used them:-)
___
FAIL !
___
What was the driver thinking when he showed up in a Prius! And how could he be involved in the accident, he would be miles behind, wouldn't he?
___
Most of them are red.

How do I stop giggling
___
The Prius was drifting showing em how its done, the rest crashed tryin to keep up with teh oober machine
___
If my melbourne experience is anything to go by, Id say the prius drifted into the fast lane and walking pace without checking mirrors or blind spot whilst a convoy of fast traveling cars were approaching.

I slow down whenever I'm approaching a prius driving kamikaze environmentalist
___
I had a RED car.
People told me they go faster.
No more ZOOM ZOOM for me on my Velocity Red Mazda 3
___
Note to Prius drivers: In the interest of your safety, keep to the left at all times. To guarantee your safety, we recommend that you stay off the roads.
___
"I have a very expensive car/status symbol, but no idea how to drive."
___
I acknowledge and apologise for my completely inappropriate laughter. (And I do of course hope that everyone involved is OK.)
___
"the cheapest invovled in the crash was a Toyota Prius hybrid, worth closer to $20,000..." unless you live in Australia in which case the Prius is worth $40,000...
___
It looks like environmentally friendly save the planet rage!
___
Who invited the nerd?
___
Somebody please smash up the Prius, even if it is just for the sake of it. All that twisted exotica and an un-dented Prius doesn't match.
___
Can a Prius reach 100km? The driver should recieve a fine for being in the fast lane.
___
Tell the towie to send the Prius to the nearest industrial compactor please.
___
Maybe the Prius got sucked into the turbulence vortexes of the overtaking Ferraris...
___
To all you people who failed Literary English, I don't see the Journo referring to the Prius as a Supercar. The headline states "supercars caught in mass pile-up ". Nowhere does it say Accident involves only Supercars. This is a public road, I seriously doubt the Prius was part of this group of Car enthusiasts. @Paul. I believe the article states the accident was caused by a Ferrari hitting a median strip. It merely states the Mercedes was in the oncoming lane. I think you have to lay it on the Tifosi la Scuderia for this one.
___
It's a good ad for the Prius - Toyota Prius, Unbreakable!
___
Oh dear, my schadenfreude just got the better of me!
___
Hey you! Stop giggling at the back!
___
They all crashed desperately trying to avoid being anywhere near the right-on Prius driver....
___
Oh that's right blame it on the ecofriendly driver! At least he's trying to save the environment, not like those idiots in their "genitalia extensions!". It's all the same with men and their toys. They just don't know how to weild them and they end up making a fool of themselves. Give me a man who's not afraid to hide behind anything, and cares for others. More men should be like the Prius driver, who would no doubt be better off in the hip pocket when it comes to the insurance excess in this accident!
___
Not the Prius!! ??? It was probably the Prius that caused it all! Most likely the first Ferrari that crashed was tryiny to avoid hitting the Toyota because it was hogging the road & doing half the speed-limit!!!
___
Some one needs to damage that Prius, big time! It would definitely have been the Prius drivers fault, I bet the Prius was parked up and the driver was hugging the trees.

Not putting miles on your car is like not having sex with your girlfriend, so she'll be more desirable to her next boyfriend.
