Royal Canadian Mounted Police Impound 13 Supercars Following A Youth Street Race

B.C. Mounties say 13 high-end luxury cars were impounded and 13 people fined after an alleged street race in Metro Vancouver on Wednesday afternoon — and police are looking at permanently seizing the vehicles.

At about 3:30 p.m. local time, police received several complaints of high-end cars speeding southbound along Highway 99 in the area of the George Massey tunnel.

Witnesses reported the cars were travelling at speeds up to 200 km/h, and on several occasions two cars would travel side by side and slow down to allow vehicles in front of them to take off in a race.

The impounded cars

The cars exited the highway into Surrey, where six of the 13 vehicles were stopped by Surrey RCMP. The other seven cars were located and stopped by White Rock RCMP a short distance away.

Thirteen drivers were pulled over and their cars — worth a total of more than $2 million — were impounded.

"The vehicles that we're dealing with here were Lamborghinis, high-end Mercedes, Maseratis, Aston Martins, high-end Nissan sports cars," said RCMP Insp. Bryon Massie.

"The majority of them had personalized plates as well and were souped-up, so they're fairly distinguished and the witnesses had no problem in providing us with the descriptors that were tracked back to the vehicles."

The drivers have each been fined $196 and will have to pay for the cost of impounding and storing their vehicles for seven days.

However, RCMP Supt. Norm Gaumont said police are looking at tougher measures.

"So we've asked our team to be looking at the possibility of criminal charges and ... if we have enough evidence to lay a charge of dangerous driving. We're also going to be looking at seizing the vehicles for good," Gaumont said.

The names of the drivers have not been released, and Massie said it's not clear where they are from.

"The drivers of the vehicles are all in around the age of 20 years old. They're all new drivers. The majority of them do not have their full driver's licence status — they're still in the 'N' new category," Massie said, referring to B.C.'s graduated licensing program, which puts restrictions on new drivers and requires them to put an 'L' or 'N' decal on their car to alert other drivers of their novice status.

The registered owner of the Lamborghini, Massie said, is only 18 years old.

He said it appears the group was getting together to celebrate one of their colleagues leaving the area.

Massie said the incident highlights an important message to drivers: "Speed is fairly unforgiving. Whenever you're involved in a motor vehicle accident where there's any speed at all, it's unforgiving ... Slow down, be responsible and understand that speed limits are there for a reason."

Wait a second. There were no proof of them speeding. Just because other drivers said they were speeding, doesn't mead they were. Those cars look fast and are loud, so they must be speeding? Can cops impound cars just because some local drivers say they were speeding? What the heck were they fine for? How the heck did the cops know they were going over 200k an hour. Local residences aren't cops and do not have a train eye for speed. I am sure they were speeding and making a mess of the freeway, but doesn't a cop have to be there to witness it first hand other then some old lady from around the neighborhood. Sound like BS to me, just because they are young rich brats. But then again, this is the great white north, what do I know.

Just wanted to add this, I was at my sister's once with my 930. I was going about 27 in a 25 zone just I knew there were kids playing around the neighborhood. One mom from a few homes down screamed at me telling me to slow down from the top of her lungs. She walks over after I parked and gave me an ear full. Yes it is loud, but I was not speeding. Just because it sound and look fast, it doesn't mean it is. I rev it up a few time to 5000 rpm before I shut it down, to cool my turbo.

Sorry HardDrive, all Asian kids. The article is being oh-so-politically-correct in not mentioning their ethnicity, but the TV news footage was pretty blunt about it, showing their personalized plates and faces without mosaic, etc. Around here people just take it as a norm, the usual rich HK and mainlanders with their shady money. It's really quite funny cause they don't even look like gang bangers or anything, just a scrawny, geeky kids you would find in high school.

My ethnicity off, but I'm giving myself half credit. Not going to say a bit more.

BC introduced "40km/h over" speeding law last September which includes impounding of your car and, I believe, suspension of your license. I guess they couldn't nail them with the suspension because the reports of "200km/h" was not verified by the police.

Only a few weeks after the new law came into effect they caught a 458 and an M5 or something racing up one of the local mountains, of course driven by kids with Novice licenses. A few days ago there was yet another "racing" incident up a different mountain with - you guessed it - two 17 year olds in a BMW and a C4S. Like I said, it's nothing out of the ordinary up here really

Why would they need to be gang bangers if they have cars or money like that? I don't understand how that's shady money just because they are from over seas? A few years ago, I did some work for a family from Hong Kong with DEEP pockets through a designer. They own buildings (small sky scarpers) back home. I did some digging about the place, there are more 5 start hotels and Rolls Royces per capita then anywhere else in the world.

The Canadian gov. did it to themselves. Didn't they issue legal residency for anyone who had a certain amount of money in a Canadian bank account a good few years back. If I remember correctly, it was 2 mil. That's tip money for some of those guys.

Maybe I'm wrong and they're all from wealthy but otherwise straight families. I'm just relating to what a very well connected friend of mine told me once. Regardless, I think it's interesting that people make such a big deal out of it (a friend from Spain saw it on CNN and told me about it) when really it is just another day in the life of Vancouver.

Rich Asians is what Vancouver is all about.

Parents are in Shanghai or similar. They buy a few mansions in Vancouver and a few Lambos for their kids so they'll have something to drive to school.

Talk to the Lambo dealer in Vancouver. The median age of their customers in 20.

Personally I think Chinese money is the best thing that ever happened to Vancouver—which used to be a very boring town full of sawmills and loggers not that long ago.

They do not see much of those type of cars where they are. There are M's all over the place around here from the old farts to the pimple faced kid. These red blooded AMerican kids, three brothers, who live down the canyon from us in this huge house. At any given time, there are a couple Lambos, and a few real expensive 60's hopped up American cars around the property. The youngest is 17 by now, the oldest had to be 23 or so. Neighbors notice, but no one say anything.

One time I was driving my 930 in the freeway, this woman and her back passenger was staring at me like I had committed a crime of the century. As they drove off, I saw the Kansas plate. A few blocks later, it hit me that they were not looking at me. They were looking at the 930.

Yea it is a beautiful city. If it stays the same in 20 years, I like to retire up there.
