Little .410 good news ..bad news....
Good News: I shot a half a box of shells through the little .410 this morning. I actually got brave and shot BOTH barrels. After the initial fear passed, I blew 6 through the dented barrel and it was fine. The only problem I see now is...
Bad News: I want it. I gotta get me one of these. If you can't afford the LC Smith .410, buy one of these at about a third of the price. Sweet little gun that flies up and swings like a dream. I may run a box through it this week end and shoot some trap with it. Gotta make sure its right....ya know (wink wink). I will take it down again and detail it all out, cut the checkering again an feed it, add a new front bead tomorrow at the shop. John it should be on it's way on Monday. Did I make bird season? Pics later. |

I used a bunch of coats of Birchwood Casey Tru-oil IIRC on mine and I guess I do not understand why you are re-cutting the checkering after finishing the wood. I would assume you would want it to remain sealed in the oil finish.
Just curious as I have never messed with checkering (yet).

Then don't..it's not for the faint of heart or with bad vision. I have a hard time seeing anything finer than 20 lines per inch. I hate checkering. I recut checkering on refinishes to be proper. Checkering should not be glossy. It's really the last thing you do after you finish the finish. The first cut I made was to cover the repairs. Then I had to recut it a second time to get the shiny off the lines from the truoil. No matter how hard you try to keep it out of recut checkering at the least it fills the borders unless you mask it off, which leaves goo in the checkering, so you have to clean it out again anyway. It's flat checkered so I had to knock the shine off the flats and then cut it from the lines. After that I use truoil cut 50% with mineral spirits brushed in the checkering to seal it without making it shiny.

Thanks........ I understood why someone would want to re-cut dull checkering on a worn stock. I guess I just never realized the finished checkering is not supposed to have any of the oil finish covering it.

You would be amazed at how clean you can get old checkering with some mineral spirits or naptha (lighter fluid) and an old tooth brush. Don't use soap and water it will cause the wood to wisker and you wil end up recutting it. Sometimes it jumps right back when all the crap is brushed out. You should be able to see the grain of the wood through the checkering and after cleaning most times you can do that. Then use the 50% mix above and yer good to go.

targa911S : you've reminded me of my Grandpa's L.C. Smith, 20ga Princess grade, I've only seen it once back when I was about 10 years old ( I'm now 53 ). My Grandpa gave the gun to my Aunt back then. Since then, she's divorced my uncle. I contacted her a few years ago to see if she would consider selling the L.C. Smith to me. She declined but said she'd leave it too me in her will.

Really impressive, excellent work. I've been thinking about it for too long, I need to start shopping for something similar.
