out with the kid the other day with his "loaded " arrington super duper match and my UBERED TO HELL/ARRINGTON SOCOM-16, beaning the living POO out of objects from 300-500yds iron sighted. just having a freeking ball calling out targets and vaporizing them out in the middle of BFE.


we freeking broke the fun barrier and even impressed the hell out of ourselves.


and suddenly...................the DREADED "CLICK" on my socom-16!

WTF HAPPENED???????????????????????


my extractor and extractor spring went into LOW LUNAR ORBIT! what a SOB to try and find. after what seemed like hours finally found both of them.


severe BUZZKILL and DE-PWESSION(depression) set in..............and STAYED!


came home, put extractor and spring under magnifying glass. no nothing to point a finger at. WTF????


finally called phil arrington and i went over to his house and he replaced extractor and spring with USGI parts.


i had already waded thru all the internet moron explanations, and i felt it was a poor springfield part.

was shooting rem 180gr corelockts. anti grizz ammo.



found out powders are DIFFERENT than what is CORRECT!


hotter powders COMPLETELY FUBAR M-14 GAS TIMING!


NEVAR USE MODERN DAY SURPLUS FROM FERIGN(foreign) COUNTRIES in yer M-14!


ONLY USE USGI/federal/hornaday from 147 to 175gr PERIOD!

and yer pushing the envelope with the 175grains USGI!

p.s. if you have ever had this happen to you.............well then ya know you need the USGI BOLT TOOL (brownells-$59.99) and 16 hands to replace firing pin/extractor/extractor spring/ejector in the bolt.

Hmmm. I wonder if this applies to M-1's as well? Not that my Garand has ever been fired...;)

Especially true with the old Garand, Paul. Many modern, slow burning powders commonly used in the .30-'06 raise gas port pressures above what the Garand is designed to take. G.I. loads use powders in the 4895 to 4064 range, which are considered relatively "fast" powders (when used in the .30-'06) by today's standards. Many modern loads use much slower powders, such as 4350, 4831, RL22, (or their canister grade equivelents) and even slower. These will batter the gas piston if used in excess. A few rounds won't hurt, but a continued diet will.

So this is where those of us with adjustable gas systems come and point and laugh? :)

FWIW I think you can get an adjustable gas plug for the '14 rifles... just lucky you didn't bend your op rod...

And yes, it applies to Garands as well.

M-14 and a socom-16 the same thing? M1A? i split this rifle with my brother and the first time he shot it, he mailed me my half of the money. sadly, a new rifle from the factory came up for $950. wife said no :)

I've got a stainless '14 with flash supressor, brass catcher, synthetic stock and tripod but I haven't seen it in close to 10 years.

Uncle's got it locked up in his safe, IN A STATE WHERE THE RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS HASN'T BEEN COMPLETELY INFRINGED ON YET!

The M-14 was designed to shoot 147 gr. bullet, in matches we used 173 gr. bullets. But at that time we only used the 173 gr. at the 500 yard line, (1973-74). A steady diet of 173 gr. rounds will beat an M-14 to death.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1322604915.jpg
I like to keep a few M-14's around.

i will have to do my homework befo opening mouth, but some adjustable gas plugs are NOT MATCH LEGAL!

but i wanna say i saw a model advertised somewheres that WAS MATCH LEGAL!


hey all i did was up the freeking ante for mr ursus horriblis(grizz) in jellystone/montana/idee-ho(idaho), to 180 grain remington corelockt's and look at the total BUMMERDUMB i had to FREEKING ENDURE!


1st thought : poor springfield armory part

2nd thought: bad ammo???

3rd thought: no primer strike on round in chamber(last round triggered)

4th WTF! where are my wittle parts in my gawd damn freeking BOLT?????



then i had my de-pwessive episode!


5th thought: WTF is my usgi manual of arms (aka the "TM") technical manual(in every case for every different model and caliber) or for when parts GO SPROING!

6th realized : we had never screwed touched bothered feeked with the (3 M1-A-rifle) bolts except to grease.

man i had bought 40rds of that remingington "KILL MY GUN" ammo and i toot sweet removed all and put back into its lil labeled box and stuffed it into my M40-A1 bag!

yes a socom-16 , a M1-A , and a M-14 are all the same except barrel lengths and the M-14 technically came as a FULL AUTO CLASS III from the FACTORIES that supplied them to the u.s. government.


now they are all semi auto. aside from the class III laws, ya better be "LIL JOHN" in the vic morrow combat tv series to shoot(hang on to) one on full auto anywhere near accurate. they are a handful on full auto!

yes i am buying the bolt assy/dis-assy tool.

spare EVERYTHINGS assoc with bolt.



and anything else my pea brain can think of thats field expedient!

2) "LOADED STAINLESS" now changed to "super duper match" via mcmillian stock and arrington accuracy. 22" barrel

3) socom-16 built by arrington accuracy here. 16" barrel fire breathing MO-FO!

I've never had this problem with my single shots and lever guns. Just sayin'...

Thanks Jeff. I got the Garand through the old DCM program. When I opened the box, saw it was a never fired I-H manufactured rifle (Korean era I think), I just closed the box back up. Figured I didn't want to pack it hunting anyay...those WWII guys were tough, packing a rifle this heavy, along with other gear, for miles...

What did you think you would get out of more grain? Load it up with 200gr. and finish it off.

No idea what this thread is about, but I've killed all my deer using Remington 180gr core lockt.

Drop down to 150gr and watch a faster projectile.

I have a Springfield, a Winchester & a HRA garand. (all mix-masters) I NEED a IHC and a Beretta Garand!

Heck Jim, you can only shoot one Garand at a time...besides, think I'll hang on to mine for a time. After all, holding only 8 rounds, it's not considered an "assault rifle", right? ;)

That's another reason that I reload my own ammo, I can make EXACTLY what I want and I pick the brass, primers, powder and bullet that I want.

This has absolutely nothing to do with bullet weight, and everything to do with the burning rate of the powder being used.

Watch as it destroys more meat through more violent expansion. Watch as it fails to penetrate sufficiently for those odd angle shots so often presented when hunting in the north woods of Michigan.

When the ZOMBIES come I can avoid Garand thumb by just dropping the rifle like a french man and grab another Garand. This of course is after I've spent all of the rounds out of my 20 some odd magazines for my M1A

Last count I had for loaded emblocs for the Garands was 250 8 round clips
