BMW M3 absent from racing this year
Am I the only one that thinks BMW screwed the racing system last year to win the GT championship in American LeMans racing?
From what I understand, they got a waiver to run the V8 in the M3 last year by telling the rule makers that they were going to put a V8 in the car and sell it to the general public. The cleaned house and won the championship. Now, since they apparently had NO PLAN (o.k., maybe they had a plan but I thought I read a couple of weeks ago that they could sell M3s with V8s but the selling price was going to be in the $225k range) to actually make the V8 available in the M3, they not only get to display the trophy they won (stole from Porsche imho) they get to say in advertising that "the governing body in France unexpectedly changed the eligibility requirements, burdening us with severe restrictions that make it impossible for us (BMW) to be competitive". Well boo-frickin'-hoo! So, first they deceive the FIA (ruling body for motorsports), then they steal the win from teams that are following the rules, now they say that they can't be competitive by following the rules and "sadly, we must sit out this season". It's unfortunate that Porsche has been sitting out of racing for the last couple of years to launch the Cayenne and have privateers keep up the good Porsche name on the track. I guess that just shows how good Porsches are if another manufacturer has to manipulate the rules to beat privateers. Opinions? Oops, I didn't do a search for BMW and ALMS before I posted my rant. I'm glad I'm not alone in my opinion.

Gorgo,
I think the GT classes should be for cars with block & heads that are for sale to the public. The Porsche GT3R is for sale to the public, but I think has significant differences between its motor & that in showroom 911s. The M3 has gone way far over the line using a V8 in a 6cyl class & the V8 isn't even for sale. drew1 |
