Problem hooking up a PC to a flatscreen TV via HDMI

Guys, need some suggestions

Have an HDMI-out jack on my HP laptop and an HDMI-in on the Sony flatscreen TV. Would like to stream Netflix from the laptop as I'm too cheap to buy a new streaming DVD player.

The problem is I can't get the laptop to be friends with the TV. The TV is switched to the correct HDMI port, and cabled direct to the HDMI-out on the laptop.

I've actually tried 2 HP laptops, and can't get a signal off to the TV. Odds are I'm missing something easy, but don't know what. It's like the HDMI out is dead. I've tried duplicating an external display with Windows, extending the display, etc. and can't make this talk.

Need some suggestions/directions. Isn't the HDMI-out on the PC just a live jack? I also tried restarting the PC with the connections hooked up, but no-go.

P.S., the flat screen is not internet-ready and does not have a LAN jack anyway.

You have to tell the laptop to output to the TV. My guess is that you haven't "enabled" the hdmi on the laptop. Most LT have a "function" key that you can press and hold while you press some other keys (usually one of the keys on the row of function keys at the top) to cycle through your options. If you are unfamiliar, then you could probably also right click on the desktop and go into your display properties to tell the LT to output to the HDMI port/TV.

masraum is right. Take a look at the F1-F12 buttons at the top of the keyboard, usually one of them (happens to be Fn+F3 on mine) switches the display from laptop>external connection>both>etc and that should do it...otherwise you can take a look at the video card properties to enable it.

Yup on mine it's F4, and it allows you to hit Duplicate / Extend / Projector only / etc.

That's not doing it. It's like my factory installed NVIDA video card can't find the HDMI port. I've updated the driver and it didn't help either. When I right click my desktop and jump into the NVIDIA panel, I see the following:




So then I select "my display is not shown" and select Rigorous Display detection, then "Force Television Detection" but notice how the "restart now" button is grayed out, so I can't use it to Restart, even though it checks the box. If I close out of the NVIDIA panel and go back in, the Force Television Detection box is unchecked again.

It's like some sicko software guy designed this thing. Arrrghhhh

Its an HP HDX 18t-1200, circa 2009. Supposed to be built to do all this whiz bang media stuff...

Turn off TV
Turn off computer.

Connect HDMI cable. Make sure the input vs output issue is correct - make sure computer out and tv in.

Turn on TV.
Set input to HDMI
Boot computer.
Set Nvidia control panel to proper settings.

Should work. Video driver (control panel) looks fine.

Being that it has both HDMI and an analog VGA -out, you should see "Projector only" and an HDMI selection.
