+...with PDK. . At a traffic light, a white S pulled up next to me...I told the driver that I liked his car - he said, "Me too, it's fun to drive." I followed him for a few miles out of my way just to drink up its beauty. 'Went home & began taking inventory of what I could sell to muster-up the coin. I am besotted! |
It seems clear to me that the Cayman is Porsche's racing platform future. It is Porsche's first-ever mid-engine coupe. Hard top. That means the chassis is stiffer and lighter than, say, a Boxster. My advice? Take one or two minutes to find out what model is the fastest, lightest and has the best suspension goodies, and buy that one. I know they make an S. I wonder if they make a Turbo yet. Then again, the Turbo would be heavier. And it would accelerate like a cat with it's hair on fire.

If you wanted to be talked out of this car, you posed the question to the wrong crowd.
|
Reading this thread just sort of hit me and made me look back almost 40 years when the 914/6 was compared to the 911. Scott
|
The only reason not to get one for me would be leg room, but it's probably only an inch difference to the Carrera.
|
This thread is causing the used Cayman market to appreciate!
Lovely cars, make so much sense. But odd to me that the Boxter preceeded the Cayman, convertibles usually follow the coupes. But they are siblings, not twins. |
So, what do you scallywags know about these gems?
scallywags!!!! haven't heard that one in years. I'm not going to try and talk you out of what sounds like a good idea.SmileWavy |
Gee, where are all the Boxster bashers? You guys are the most fickle bunch of hypocrites I've ever seen.
Oh well, I could give a rat's ass. I've been enjoying the platform since 2002. BUT, the comments about size are valid. It can be tight in there for a big guy. |

I also can't drive an early 911 unless it has an aftermarket steering wheel. You have to try one on for size. |
Just keep your eye on the mirrors, be prepared to let faster cars by. ;)

Hey, whipped...you failed to note the winky smiley? Of course, Porsche is "superior" to Mustang in every way...especially sticker price. How dare I question your wisdom...SmileWavy
|
notice the improper hand position of that 'stang driver
|
more likely - the car broke down and they snapped a pic of the owners death grip on the wheel

Said the same about 996, but owned a 2003 gt3, and would probably buy a 996 again, possibly a cab for a cruiser..... Also said I'd never buy a boxster..... built a boxster-spec last year...... |

BTW, if you had one of the new 5.0 Mustangs I wouldn't have argued. |

You say EVERY car related thread? Uh, I don't think so...but you hang on to your beliefs, okay? Mike & I have met...he knows I was joshing. I guess you didn't. Lighten up, okay? SmileWavy |

"Blasphemy! As we have all been educated, there is no automobile on earth that can match the greatness of the mighty Mustang! To say otherwise will show your obvious snobbery and hatred for America."
Who said that on 11-28 here? I know it wasn't me... Lighten up...buy and drive what you like, and I'll do the same, okay? Oh...and please use green for sarcasm.. |
If it makes you feel good and go weak in the knees, then do it. You only go around once and there are no do overs.

Can't afford it right now, but this would make a nice spec car: 2000 PORSCHE BOXSTER 72k miles Personally, I'd love to take a Boxster and make it the lightest one in the country. Always been more about weight than hp for me. |

The cool factor....
has been engineered out of so many cars. The 60's Mustang looked cool, the Bullett Mustang looked cool. Latter day Mustangs dont look so cool. New 911s look okay and drive well but I still think value for money the Cayman and Boxsters-any year look cool and drive well. However with the Boxster you can put the top down....now thats cool:)

Nice. For those in the know and want to budget, these Boxsters for the money are incredible deals. Yes, yes, yes with the issues, but if you sort it out, stay away from the Porsche dealer and do the preventive work yourself, its a terrific car. In the Chicago area, on occasion the early models are found in the $6500 to $8k range. Some owners get freaked when the talk of IMS comes up or the noisy lifters and go to the dealer. Dealers offer them ACV of $5000 towards a new car or its a $16,000 engine and the Boxster owner leaves crying. |

I think the Cayman is the most desirable of the late-model Porsche road cars. Obviously I'm leaving out the track-focussed GT3's and GT2's in that statement but properly set-up, I bet a Cayman would give one of those a run for their money as well. I'd love to add one to my garage. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...s/beerchug.gif |
I have always liked the Cayman a lot and thought about getting one, but I don't need another 2-seater (have 2 young kids). My vote is to go for it!
|
we're going for a test drive tomorrow. will report back.
|
Prediction: You will have one in the garage before the end of next week; signed, sealed and driven home.
Enjoy Les |
My friend might, had a first date last night with her. Only date in my entire life where I've raced; me in my 73, her in her Boxster, from the Museum Science to the restaurant for dinner. It was ungodly fun, and we picked up a 944 Turbo along the way. Too bad the Mass Pike got a little trafficky. Pretty good date. :D
