The Deadly Treadly

I just wanted to have a little brag....I ride my bike at a local velodrome, the road wigs me out. One the problems in going round and round and round is keeping it interesting. So I set myself targets. My target has been to hold an average speed of 30kmh (about 19mph) for one hour. Today I did it. Pic shows one hour elapsed and 34kmh on the dial. Crossed the line with an average of 30.7 kmh on the clock.

Now ofcourse here is the problem- this young guy was on the track when I got there, consistently lapping me, and was still lapping at around 36kmh when I left...

Fine accomplishment!

I'd like to ride on a track like that. The only track I've ridden on was the Alpenrose Velodrome and that puppy is STEEP... Fun, because you drop in like bullet but I think I'd probably have a better work out (like your hour test) on a less steep bank.

Again - FINE job!'

Thanks Nynor

Hi Angela
The banking on this drome is pretty tame, and it really offers no advantage (maybe if you were racing) as the thing itself is dead flat. Its quite funny, because you often see little kids on scooters get out there and think they are going to go whizzing up and down the banks.....its a good lesson in physics for them, its a long way around on a little scooter with 3in wheels.

The best thing is there is no cars, no lights, no pot holes, noone flinging their door open in front of you. You can put the the earpods in, put your head down and follow the line on the road and just go. Its a good ride because you do not stop. Very easy on the bike too. No bumps, no brakes, no gear changes.

Cool goal! Congrats! What's next?

I'd get bored, fall asleep and die in a tumble of gears and lycra trying to ride a track like that.

Next...31 kmh. When I started doing this, I couldnt take more than 20 mins. It bored me witless, and Id go off for a road ride. But...now I find it very relaxing, the hour just whizzes by. Thing is, being a flat track, if you stop pedalling, you stop moving.....So theres Zakk Wylde or Mahler or Black Country Communion or Vivaldi or Melody Gardot in yours ears and you just sort of go into the zone. Sometimes you can ride laps with others in a mini pellaton and draft or do the hard work upfront, which is fun.

I dont know how people can swim laps of a pool for an hour though....

i used to ride a bit. i hear ya with the boredom. then, bam, the zone. that is exactly how i felt riding rollers.
