Is there anybody...

out there like me that gets a hangover with as little as 3 drinks? I used to have a grandfather who was in the merchant navy and they were each given a daily tot of rum. My grandfather used to discreetly dump it over the side of the ship because he did not like it:confused:. Consequently it seems to run on my father's side of the family - a lack of tolerance for alcohol. However I do like a few drinks but pay for it dearly the next morning. Anybody else like me out there?
Signed off : liver is still intact;)

I've always been a cheap drunk but I only really suffer when I mix my drinks.

So if I drink Scotch only I'm fine but God help me if I have just one glass of wine as well. :(

What's always worked for me is to drink plenty of water while I'm drinking and to pop a couple of asprin before going to bed.

White wine and scotch for me are the only things that tend to disagree with me at any level of consumption - I don't care for white wine but do enjoy a good single malt from time to time. Just have to make sure I don't have more than 2 fingers on any one day

i think i learned the hard way that booze and tylenol is a very bad combo.

my liver suffered.

i had much difficulty in maintaining that happy buzz..the edge is "right there" for me.

my brothers med friends bring IV bags. they love to drink. scary.

I hate to admit it, but I'm the same way. I can feel the effects of even just one beer the next day... I think I may have some sort of allergy or gastrointestinal aversion to it.

It's not that I don't like to drink or the effect of alcohol, but the Pavlovian conditioning of feeling like hell the next day keeps me away from partaking very often. If I decide to drink though, I may as well go "all out" as the after effects are the same no matter the quantity! :D

Opposite end of the spectrum here. Saturday night had 26 drinks, beer and rum, didn't even feel the buzz and no hang over. Getting to be a very expensive drunk! Dam......

WOW. You are a professional drinker.

All I drink is beer. I can down a 6 pack in a evening and not feel drunk and never have any problems in the morning. I learned a LONG LONG time ago that no hangover is worth the fun from the night before.

a couple of glasses of champagne will give me a hangover. it is not a good one, either. red wine, beer, whisky, and vodka seem to work out best for me, in reverse order listed. although, i've slowed down quite a bit.

Quit drinking after my diabetes diagnosis. Now when I get a headache, it really pisses me off.

when i was in college, i drank about 7-9 gin and tonics a night...and just felt a "buzz." i've pretty much given up drinking in the last few years. i have one g&t, and im feeling it.

as for the IV bags...the last time i got REALLY hammered was in '07. and yes...i was partying with my buddy who was Army Special Forces at the time. His SF medic buddy had us all hooked up to IV's the next day. it worked like a charm.

+1 for water and asprin. If I still wake up in a fog, I'll fix a PoewerBar Recovery drink to help get back the electrolytes that were washed out of my system.

26 light beers and Cuba Libres don't count as drinking. Someone needs to introduce that young man to stout and single malt.

Tee Hee Hee... Sailor Jerry's and ginger ale (tall) But our beer up here in Canada is not so bad as that. Actually that night included a couple shots of scotch before jumping in the limo. True I like a nice stout but can only handle three or four before I feel bloated.....

I would take you up on the drinking lessons anytime! Always a pleasure to share a drink with a true gentleman!

Most of the hangover symptoms are caused by dehydration.
Tylenol is a really bad idea when your liver and kidneys are already working overtime.

Drinking plain water will help but mix in a sports drink like gator-aide or three and that will make a big difference.
Some folks alternate drinks of booze with water.
Or just don't drink very much.

gprsh924 12-21-2011 12:50 PM

Once in a blue moon I will feel the affects after just a few drinks. For the most part though, I'm pretty much hangover free unless we really get after it and do some marathon (12+) hours of drinking.

Before bed, have some food, water and ibuprofen (no acetaminophen) and you'll be good to go.

Im still just about in college mode when it comes to booze.

Dueller 12-21-2011 01:06 PM

Primary cause of hangover is dehydration caused by the diuretic affect of alcohol. Hangovers are much less likely if you have a drink of water between alcoholic drinks.

And no, drinking scotch AND water will not work.:D

I'm 59 and in the last 2 years if I have 3 beers I can feel it the next morning. 2 and I'm fine but that 3rd one is felt. I guess father time is catching up.

When I was younger and got more practice, I could drink a fair amount. These days, I hardly drink at all. If I have more than a drink these days I can feel it and if I have a few, I feel it the next day. I think a lot of it is what you're used to.

That said, drink lots of fluid with your alcohol. Alcohol is a diuretic, and I believe a big cause of the headache is dehydration. I occasionally have a "hangover" (similar headache) from a long day working out in the heat with lots of sweating.

Also, when I bartended, I had a few guys that said that when they started ordering their drinks in tall glasses (extra mix, soda, water, etc...) they stopped getting hangovers.

sammyg2 12-21-2011 02:57 PM

Maybe you're just allergic to pretzels.

Back in my younger years on occasion I'd stop in a bar for a couple three or four hours, and they always had free pretzels on the bar.
The next day I felt like crap, so it must have been the pretzels.
