The inhumanity of youth...what is the realistic punishment?

Man this really made my jaw drop. This kind of brutality pales in comparison to war and other uncivil crimes but d-a-m-n. What is the punishment for these lids? Clearly they're not right in the head, how can they be? But how to make them truly see the error of their ways?

You can punish them, but if they are 17, and think that beating homeless men is good idea, I have little faith you can rehabilitate them. If they don't have empathy at this point......

17 is close enough. Treat them as adults

+1. I was not even close to matureat 17, but I was still mature enough to enlist. Hammer the little snots.

I'm pretty sure I'd be facing some serious jail time were I to witness something so disgusting. That wouldn't even enter my mind at the time however...

LWJ 12-21-2011 09:27 AM

The issue is empathy. They don't see homeless as themselves. They need to have a task where they come to see homeless as humans -better yet as humans with very little power or resources.

Related. I have a coworker who tossed heated coins to a homeless guy while his son was watching. Then he boasted of this. What kind of social stereotype do we have of the homeless?

The article makes no mention of Dad or Mom.
Wonder what kind of lessons this kid grew up recieving.
What kind of punishment? thousands of hours working with the homeless,at the shelter.
Then off to the military.

Actually, it says that the Dad died Dec 9.

Doreen Byrne, Giresi’s grandmother, said Tuesday that Taylor has had behavioral problems since he was a juvenile. She said he suffers from Kleinfelter’s Syndrome, the presence of an extra X-chromosome in males which, in some cases, causes learning disorders.

She also said her grandson lost his father, Salvatore Giresi, on Dec. 9.

But, she said, "I not making any excuses for him. It looks like he’ll be going away for a long time."

We need to adjust our prisons mission.
Forget rehabilitation, prisons are for punishment.
Shift the rehabilitation to the parole officers.

there is some truth here. without suffering and self reflection, together, there is no rehabilitation. prisons should be hard time, breaking rocks, digging ditches, etc. save the counseling and rehabilitation for the last six months, maybe.

Yep. Put in prison where the real bad dudes stay. Let them learn first hand what it is like to not be in control of the situation. Some dude the size of Shaquille O'Neal needs to tell them they look real cute and "bend over, you gonna be my wife now"

VINMAN 12-21-2011 11:54 AM

That was here in my neighborhood. next town over. Pretty sad.

Bureaucracies work both ways

Just let them go on $1 bail and turn a blind eye while they get the schit beaten out of them by an angry mob. Then refuse them treatment at the hospital. As they bleed to death outside the hospital reiterate in graphic detail what they had done so nobody feels sorry for them. Then investigate the case with the same attention as a stolen 20 y/o Honda.

I bet the moron that posted those videos on YouTube was thinking "They're gonna love this one..." Darwin rules!

That's bad, but we just had a case in Omaha where two 15-year-olds forced a 6-year-old girl to perform sex acts on her 4-year-old brother. I don't see how those 15-year-olds should ever be allowed into society.

While I think the actions of these youths deplorable, I am a bit surprised at the outrage. I saw much worse than this every day in high school. Did this not happen where you folks went to school?

Hell no, not around here. There was one incident I recall where a group was "ganging up" on this girl (outside of school), and when "the rest of us" found out...let's just say it never happened again :).

ps: I'm certainly no "badass" but crap like that "pushes the wrong button", and there's no way I'll remain on the sideline. That's just me...
