You said 911 part is expensive?

My Toyota minivan rear hatch keep comming down by itself. I called Toyota and found that it cost around $190 each. I told the guy that he might be mistaken what I need with something else, and mentioned that my rear hatch is not power driven. He said he knows what I need. I need a strut support. He added: "You have a Toyota. Nothing Toyota is cheap". I thought to myself: "wow, I am so out of date. Since when Toyota became so luxury".
$190 for a simple strut support? Our 911 hood strut is how much? Maybe $20 if I remember right. A buddy got me the "high performance" hood strut. It costs around $40, and we already thought that was expensive.

Get a broom handle for $5 at Home Depot. At least that would be multi-use (hatch prop, broom handle, self defense, etc.).

Yeah, then stick a "Toyota" sticker on it and sell 'em for $50 each on Ebay.

Better still, stick a "TRD" sticker on it and sell 'em for $200 each on Ebay to all the boy racer idiots. ;)

Instead of the dealers try one of these places, I've had pretty good luck with both of them, or you might even call your FLAP and see what they have.

Toyota Parts - Genuine OEM Toyota Auto Parts and Accessories

Toyota Parts Cheap - Genuine OEM

I can't stand my local Toyota dealer.

And, you can offer a lifetime warranty!

What year toyota?

strupgolf 12-22-2011 05:08 AM

Go to a junkyard, 10 bucks.

Rot 911 12-22-2011 05:11 AM

I think a lot of people would be surprised at what parts cost for newer cars. It is just that most new cars don't need much work done on them, or the repairs are done under warranty, so you never know the prices. Go out and price new struts, water pumps, etc, for late model Japanese cars.

jmaxwell 12-22-2011 05:20 AM

Flaps also have generic replacements that might work.

porsche4life 12-22-2011 07:05 AM

I'm still hurting over the $15 sparkplugs my VW took....

fanaudical 12-22-2011 07:06 AM

When I had a Subaru, I was consistently surprised to find that Subie parts were almost always more expensive than their Audi equivalent.

Monroe (the shock/strut people) make a replacement line "Max-Lift" and they offer fitments for any year Toyota Sienna.
List price $43 each. My cost $21.

Depending on year:
PN 901532, 1998-2003
PN 901533, 2004-2008

Carquest carries them under that part number but under the Carquest name

VincentVega 12-22-2011 07:20 AM

No kidding. I've been using ******** for most parts I cant get from Pelican lately, they have a few options for ~$22-$29.

I would only check the dealer for a reference price or for something only they can source.

Try your everyday POS Chevy van. Dealer parts prices are out of control. Two of my vans, one a heavy duty box truck uses the same door handle made for 35+ years. It breaks and a little cr@ppy piece of pot metal inside cost $65.00! They made millions of these things, so you tell me why this cost so much? Next one was my Chevy AWD Astro with the barn doors... same thing... handle just snaps and its $72.00 for the little part! I do my own labor but could only imagine paying another $85.00 per hour to have it fixed.

For comparison, its comical how reasonable a 911 from the 80's era is to own. Full brake jobs for parts - pads - fluid change - rebuild caliper kits for a total cost of $100 or less. Other parts like those hood struts are $20 each or less (Pep Boys). I'm keeping my old sealed beams because they are dirt cheap and actually have better reflective and photometrics than H4's. The high end sealed beams from Sylvania (Vision X-tra) are excellent. Better branded tires (16"s) speed rated from the Tire Rack ran $378 delivered to my door. I could go on, but I think we already know this.

You're absolutely right! Honda wants nearly $100 for a friggin' polished exhaust tip for a newer Civic. That's right, one hundred dollars!!!

This^^^

I always check w/ the dealer for Toyota parts, then go generic if the price is bananas. Toyota parts are weird, though, some parts are very reasonable and equivalent to the generic and other parts prices are goofy. You just have to check.
