The line it is drawn, the curse it is cast; the slow one now will later be fast....

I love Bob. Always have. Always will. His music and poetry have been constant companions in my life since I first bought his "Hey Mr. Tambourine Man" with my allowance at the age of 13.

I had to chuckle though today at Restoration Hardware, where they had a big stand flogging the "Bob Dylan Christmas Gift Pack". 10 classic CD's, a nice picture book and a friggin T-shirt for....wait for it...$359.-! All in a huge white box with a nice red ribbon around it.

There's "selling out"—and then there's "selling out in style".

Bob always gets it right.

His nephew was my roommate in college. Spoke with him on the phone, met him once, learned a lot about him, saw tons of photos, heard lots of stories. An amazing man, an amazing mind.

Thought we were talking about the Cayman for a sec. LOL

pete3799 12-23-2011 03:08 PM

Dylan was one of my favorites.
After Slow Train Coming....not so much.
A great talent no doubt about it.

Oh....and whoever it is that did the Knocking on Heavens Door cover recently should be hanged.

RWebb 12-23-2011 03:12 PM

speaking of selling... the lingerie ad was interesting

Lord knows I've paid some dues getting through
Tangled up in blue.

Don't give up on him yet, this song is from Modern Times, and there is a ton of superb vintage video in this clip . . . .

If you like Dylan you should check out the documentary on DVD (think I will watch it this weekend)

Bob Dylan - No Direction Home

The folk movement HATED him when he switched to electric.

Personally, I have never forgiven him for that.

He lost me when he had the temerity to pass judgement on my hometown in "hurricane" . FBD

Not at all... watch the documentaries, he was touring England when he made the switch... played the first half of the show acoustic, second half electric. The crowd loudly booed him the second half (footage in the documentary).
They interviewed people leaving and they talked about Bob "selling out" and were genuinely ticked off.

Obviously Dylan got over it. ;)

Well I never!

Zeke 12-23-2011 04:53 PM

Well, he wasn't meant to be Pete Seeger.

imcarthur 12-23-2011 05:08 PM

This thread is starting to bring back some memories . . .

One of my favorites: Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands

I guess I should get around to buying some music to replace those scratchy beer-splattered LPs . . .

Sorry Scott, I was pulling your plonker.

But I do wonder about the demographic that's buying the $359.- Bob Dylan Christmas Box at Restoration Hardware.

I'm a big big fan going back to the '60s, when I was still in short pants. I'm also a Minnesotan and I have lots of Dylan stories for you, including dating his daughter in college. When we meet some day, I can talk your ear off w/ BD stories. I've got Christopherson stories and Neuwirth stories and Willy Nelson stories and JD Souther stories as well for you.

And found out the hard way nobody gives a damn"

If the collected works of Dylan is worth $359, then a copy of Blonde on Blonde must be worth about $350. His considerable talent seems scattered and inconsistent except on that album. It may prove to be the pinnacle of an amazing career, but you never know with him.

BlueSkyJaunte 12-23-2011 08:19 PM

Best Dylan song ever.

You da man Denis. Must hear your story about dating her royal highness.

I have a few good ones to share with you in return....

Great clips on that video Herr Oberst. Thanks for posting.

Anyone who claims that Dylan's genius ended with Blonde on Blonde or Slow Train Coming just hasn't been paying attention at all.

His Royal Bobness abides.

All of the coolest guys in the world are pretty much pushing 70 right now. All of the Bobs, (Dylan/Neuwirth/DeNiro), Christopherson, Martin Sheen, Willy, JD, etc... If you know one, you've pretty much met them all. The Malibu mafia. Throw in Jack Nicholson and Harry Dean+Sam Shepard for good measure. :)

Maria was, and probably still is very beautiful. This is because she is Sara's daughter, Bob adopted her. She married Peter Himmelman, a well-known Mpls. musician and they've had a bunch of kids I think. Haven't seen her in decades but she was really a babe. Bob came in almost every night that she worked with the rest of the brood, Jesse/Jakob/Annie and I can't remember other kid's name. It was a real ****ty, "family style" restaurant, too. Owned by another famous Iron Range guy, though, Mick Palucci whose dad was Gino Palucci. (Gino's frozen pizza and Chun King Chow Mein, a real frozen food barron). Maybe they were family friends...it's a small world up there in Hibbing and Duluth.

That summer, (1981), was during Bob's big *back to Minnesota* phase. They lived outside of town and he went out almost every night to one club date or another. Marshall Crenshaw one night, The Motels the next, Prince, Husker Du, you name it. I'd run into him during the day in the city driving around in his beat-up early '70s Eldorado convertible w/ the top down, usually driving around the lakes or in Uptown. Mpls. really was cool in those days, not anymore. After the Stray Cats show in a club, he had an after party at his house and invited them. That was fun. If you ever go to one of his houses, he has bowls of Kool cigs everywhere. If there aren't bowls of Kools, someone is lying to you. It isn't really his house.

My Dad is part owner of a bar up on Madeline Island in Lake Superior called Tom's Burned-down cafe. We have live music all summer and every year John Koerner is one of our big attractions. He probably has the best early Dylan stories of anyone on earth but I never want to bug him with that. He's too interesting on his own. Wine/women/song...;)
