The one on the right in the last photo I've had for a year or two and is a ridiculously amazing bass. The one on the left showed up today. It has a fretted brother that got delayed by a technical glitch. Gorgeous bass but I'm not sold on the tone yet. Part of the problem is the bass bar in my house is stupid high. Between the Rob Allen and the Fodera, any other bass is going to have a tough time measuring up...

You'd think with all the money you get paid for being a moderator, you could afford to have them throw in some frets!

Nylon strings for the single f-hole? Sweet. Where be the pickups?

The bass with the F-hole is my Rob Allen Deep 5. It has a piezo pickup integrated into the bridge and the knobs are on the bridge as well (vol, bass/treble). 5-piece walnut/ebony neck with ebony fingerboard. That bass is amazing, is chambered alder with somewhat rare blonde walnut top. I've had that for a year or two and Rob is finishing up a 4-string version with the same spec. Every gig I take that on I get compliments on the sound from either musicians or the crowd or both.
The new one is a Skjold. It is redwood top on alder body (not chambered), ebony fingerboard over a 3-piece maple neck. It weighs about the same as the RA. I can't get an accurate weight as it won't balance on my small scale but it is 7.5 lbs max. I have another new one but it doesn't officially exist until the NAMM show... |

I'm with Sammy. For a few bucks more, you could've gotten them to install frets.
I can't hear the tone, but the appearance is......HOT! She's dynamite.

Truly sweet instrument. Have you ever played an 8 string?

Not IMHO. The paired strings are an octave apart and give an amazing, rich sound. Consider a 12 string acoustic guitar.

Yeah, 8 and 12 string are just glorified 4 strings. Think the intro to Jeremy by Pearl Jam. I can approximate the sound with my Micro Pog pedal.
Sadly this bass isn't really floating my boat. Plays well but sonically I'm in a different space. It is funny because I ordered it over a year ago and the builder nailed what I was asking for. The problem is that a year later my ear/head is hearing different things ![]() I briefly had a Chapman Stick. Talk about confusing... |

That Takamine I bought had a rubber neck so I returned it. Currently I am stalking a fretless 4 string version of one of these. Anybody played one of these? Michael Kelly dragonfly. They seem to get good revues and look like a lot for the money.
