tax fraud

if you suspect that your partners ex is lying on his taxes, not just alittle, do you turn him in to the feds?

if you have proof; tax returns for the last three years.... payments from him durring those years that total more than his reported gross income for those years, one year he paid us double what he claimed as income...
partner does not want to cause problems, but I feel a moral obligation as this seems to be a lot more than " fudging a few numbers"

Well, whistle blowers aren't always the winners...personal experience from doing "what is right".

Are alimony payments deductable?

Nein, nein, nein. You stay out of his business. Or he will come back and get you somehow. Everyone's GF has an ex so there is no point in witch hunting this guy.

.... I know that he will eventually get his, karma is out there looking for him.

I don't think the numbers are big enough to get the irs's attention.

at the heart of it I feel that everyone should contribute to the pot, and I don't abide liers-

He's not doing anything that Exxon Mobil or GE isn't doing, he just doesn't own a politician to make it safe and legal for him. Our tax laws have become so blatantly unfair that I don't see "cheating" as a moral issue anymore. If everybody was subject to the same rules - yeah it would be immoral to cheat.

The IRS has a confidential system to turn in tax cheats. No way to trace it back to you. Drop a dime on him. You know it's the right thing to do. But no need to stick your head up and deliberately place yourself in the line of fire.

How Do You Report Suspected Tax Fraud Activity?

You could even get a reward if you didn't want to remain anonymous.

Think of the kittens!!!!

FWIW, his tax person might be suggesting some interesting deductions and ways to harbor money and avoid taxes. This might be off the advise of someone else.

Of course, no good deed ever goes unpunished. Reminded of that recently...

How much do you hate your partner?
She will most likely be the biggest loser on this deal.

Not putting miles on your car is like not having sex with your girlfriend, so she'll be more desirable to her next boyfriend.

What kind of partnership and are you talking about his individual return as opposed to a K-1? And how certain are you that he is cheating? Sounds like trouble.

individual return-

if you reported a gross income of 6600- for the year and had to make payments on three pieces of property and pay your ex 1000 per month.....

What if he has a ton of deductions and he had to borrow money to pay alimony? I would have a tough time calling the IRS on anybody, especially if I was not absolutely certain he was evading taxes. AGI vs. lifestyle doesn't always equate, and discrepancies between the two does not mean the guy is cheating on his taxes.

I never wanted to be the "little girl in pigtails" who raises her hand to rat on Johnny.

No one likes a rat fink. I mean no one....

If she is getting her $1000 a month (and she wants to keep getting it) I would keep my mouth shut.

This sounds more like a personal vendetta than a moral thing. I have been wrong (many times) before.

That proves nothing. Gross income for one year and payments for alimony and other crap don't necessarily directly relate to each other. My income has varied wildly from one year to the next in the past. Do you have bank statement copies too, know how much is in his IRA/401k, know what loans he has outstanding. I'd stay out of it.

Gross income of 6k a year means he is on the 1040EZLOOKIHAVENOINCOME form.

Or he is a liar and is committing tax fraud.

So, your question is, do I keep getting money from a tax cheat or do I do the right thing?

Six thousand a year gross, right? $500.00 a month?

This is a guy you could drop a dime on and he'd actually notice.
