If you end up in town on a weeknight or weekend, by all means give me a buzz. There is a good chance I will be out tinkering in the shop. If you stop out we can go for a spin in the plane and/or have a few drinks looking at and discussing motorcycles, Porsches, airplanes, guns etc.... I always have a few projects in the works. :) |
Tim it would be great to stop by!
|
Tim, I'm a about 3 hours south of you but I like to got out and watch the hillbillies go around in circles on a summer evening - usually at Kil Kare or Shady Bowl but I'd travel to see you race. I'll google Oakshade and see what their schedule is. Please let us know when you'll be running.

Project update:
New kick out oil pan installed, about ready to go back in car. Just received my new 6 1/4" 3 disk low inertia button clutch. Removed lightened 2 spd + reverse gearing from cracked saginaw trans that came in the car and re-installed in spare gear box that came with the car. Hopefully this thing will be ready to startup next weekend. May end up getting some taller valve covers as clearance is tight http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1366573048.jpg Left to right: Spare that I switching to, Original lightened cracked unit, old 4 spd out of our Chevelle (will be my spare) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1366573100.jpg Lightened gear train in foreground (gears removed which retains 2nd gear for the pits and 3rd gear for racing + reverse) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1366573369.jpg Gears going back into cleaned up good case http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1366573657.jpg All buttoned up with new gaskets/seals http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1366573478.jpg |
Oops... wrong picture of engine... here is how it sits right now with water pump, PS pump, fuel pump, belts and fan installed.

Update:
After solving some issues with throwout bearing/slave cylinder/lever geometry, new 3 disk Ram assault clutch installed and engine/trans mounted in car. Drive shaft shortened and just awaiting new rear end pinion yoke and drivetrain will be finished. Still lots to do, but having fun tinkering with it. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1369430610.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1369430673.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1369430743.jpg |
Blew this whole weekend building a new exhaust as we have to use cast iron exhaust manifolds per track rules in this class...... Cut, grind, lift car, tack weld, cuss, lower car, cut, grind, tack weld..... repeat over and over. Just finished TIG welding the whole affair and I like it. (2) 3" primaries going into 4" outlet collector. Still might add a 45 degree section of 4" to exit car at the side.
Total cost using the collector that came with the car was $45 at a local muffler shop for the bent elbows, but man it was a lot of work snaking this mess past the frame rails, starter, clutch slave cylinder, shifter linkages etc. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370208503.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370208556.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370208631.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370208687.jpg |
Solid work tim!
I'm surprised you don't have a tubing bender! |
That'll be loud, but at least it'll be hot, too! Good thing the mains are in the cool of the evening.
Is it hard to snake it in and out? Outstanding craftsmanship, as usual. |
It's VERY tedious work - fabricating those pipes.
Well done, Tim - and thanks for sharing. You'd fit right in on some of our local oval tracks! |

The two primaries detach from the collector and will be secured with band clamps I am making tonight. Both pipes can be installed from the bottom although you would never think it possible when you first peer up from underneath the drivers side. I still need to make a hangar to support the collector. This set-up is what is recommended per Brzezinski's web site for the best set-up for classes requiring the cast iron exhaust manifolds. Supposedly it is good for 10-25 more horsepower than just running two short straight pipes. |

Think you'll be out this season? |

Finally got it running! I have had it up and down the runway a few times.... Need to wear earmuffs when running it in the shop. It is insanely loud. Going to park it in the other room and catch up on some daily driver car maintenance.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1372155702.jpg Here is a crappy cell phone video I uploaded of it running. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/107zfIE5JZA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
Hey, Tim. Sent you a pm.

Wow.... Jim (Dueller) is one hell of a thoughtful guy! He was cleaning out his garage and asked if I could use some more Cleco temporary fasteners on my race car or airplane projects. He ended up shipping me a "care package" with 100+ clecoes, some spark wire terminals, some AN fittings, some rivet tools and last but not least..... a very nice hydraulic corner weight checking tool which will come in very handy once I start racing this car. The corner weight tool will greatly aid in making suspension adjustments at the track possible without as much guess work.
You shouldn't have Jim! (but I am happy you did) :D Thanks a big bunch!!!! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1383948051.jpg |
Were you able to make any races this year, or even hot lap it for awhile to see what you got ?
