Son's new Fender guitar...

Daniel used his Guitar Center gift cards and $ that he got for Christmas to buy this Fender Telecaster (tobacco burst) today...

It was $700, marked down to $600 (floor model) and he had more than $200 in gift cards and a "$100 off coupon", so he was able to buy it and still have $ for college and his car... His band (Dandelion Brigade) is doing very well and he's adding the Fender to his "collection" of Schecter guitar, Fender Precision Bass, Taylor acoustic, mandolin, ukelele, etc....

The photo upload/resize feature isn't working for me, I can't upload any pics... It has always worked before...

Love Telecasters. Wonder why more people don't use them. Vintage Telecaster and a Fender Twin Reverb is a recipe for SWEEEEET tone.

Dan really wanted this Telecaster because it has the pickups he was looking for. The neck is nice and the action seems to be perfect for him.

Danny Gatton was an alien. The video from Gallagher's that is on youtube is freaking amazing.

There is some good Buchanan stuff on youtube also. I'm a big fan of the early Roy stuff.

Saw Danny a few times...I am seldom in awe of a player, but as you say, he was not of this world.

Johnny Hiland, Greg Koch, Tommy Emmanuel, Ben Lacey, Tom Bresh, etc... are all my favorites from NAMM shows in the past. Daniel listens to a lot of them and learns how they play...

Ah.... Danny Gatton. Cruisin' Deuces. The tune "Sky King" is the best.
Good choice for a guitar. I have an American Standard natural with a maple neck and love it. Put a tortoise pick guard on it.
I am listening to "Sky King" as I type this. Just great.

Dan is very excited about the new guitar! He hasn't had much time to play it yest as he and his girlfriend went to a concert last night (Suicide Machines, Less Than Jake, etc...) and he's driving a Zamboni at the local ice rink until 5pm today. He will play it with his band this weekend...

I've never played a Telecaster. How do they feel / sound when compared to a strat?

All other things being equal, the neck pickup on a tele will probably not be as good as the neck pickup on a strat and the bridge pickup on the strat will never be as good as the bridge pickup on the tele. The controls on the tele are in a much better spot, IMO.

I have a tele and a strat (as well as an acoustic, a new Les Paul clone and a Epiphone Dot but lets not talk about my guitar issues...).

My instructor said something pretty funny about Tele's a month ago or so. He said when you play a tele, "the suck button is on". Meaning, there is something about a Tele that will not hide things if you F up. It sounds awesome when played right but if you hit a bad note on a Tele you know it. Sometimes on a strat or a humbucker type guitar the bad notes get lost a little more. Maybe it's because the Tele is a brighter, twangier sound that cuts through more. Dunno.

I love my Tele, I just wish I was good enough to play it well. My instructor wailed on it a few weeks ago during a jam session and it sounded amazing!
