Honesty

Needed new shoes for the DD. looked around and found a good deal at Walmart.com, free ship to store, mount and balance so ordered them yesterday. Tires are supposed to show up in a week to ten days but got an email that they were in. Cut out of work early today to get them put on. Remember it's all paid for in advance.

Guy scans my order and it pops up with a set of Goodyears that retail for $80 a piece more than what I bought. Tell him that's not what I ordered but if he wants to put them on I'm fine with it. He goes inside and brings out the more expensive tire so I tell him again the order is paid for, those are not what I bought but if the system says put those on them go right ahead.

He thinks for a bit and goes to see his supervisor who tells him my tires are in the special delivery bin.

I'm happy the guy did not make a very expensive possibly job ending mistake but if he had put them on......

Sounds like you told them three times. If they had put them on they would have expected you to pay the difference. Thats when it would have gotten interesting. I need four for a Honda. My usual guy wants to hit me up for over 500.00. Think I am going to shop around a bit.

Now that's honesty. I'm amazed how many people who look the other way or don't say anything when stuff like that happens consider themselves honest. I had this discussion with the gf recently. I watched a clerk ring up something and give me $5 too much in change. Before she even handed me the cash I told her she made a mistake.

"I don't think so."
"Count it, miss."
"Oh." Looks at me with genuinely puzzled expression. "Thanks."

Once outside, the G is asking why I said anything. "Umm, because I'm honest." "I forgot, you're from KY." WTH?

Good practice. Makes the shaving mirror a much more pleasant visit in the morning.

People make mistakes and people are stupid and lazy. Can't fix the latter. Your call every time.

Me, I've been fvked around by so many companies that I'm running out of vocal chords. If it looks good, I'll take it.

You are a good guy. You may have saved the kid his job, plus you did the right thing.
Simply "doing the right thing" is important. It's a sign of character. Good on ya.

At first I thought the tires I ordered were NA and they were offering me a make good but the price differential was just too great for that to make any sense.

I was not worried about a bait/switch as everything was pre paid meaning when the tires were on the car there would be no checkout, just get in my car and go.

The guys English was not the best at he seemed confused about the order which is why I reiterated that it may be a mistake.

Turns out it was his 1st time processing a site to store order.

Still no reason to let him make a mistake that I had a strong feeling was simply a mistake.

I find Karma works both ways.

Years ago I run to Pep Boys for some stuff, brought my boy who was maybe 3 at the time.

While there I see a killer deal on a small pressure washer and manage to snag the last box on the shelf. As I'm checking out I notice the pressure washer box looks to have been opened and resealed so I mention it to the cashier. He does not even look at it and says it's NIB. Asked him again pointing out why I thought it was a return. He assures me it's fine. My boy is getting rambunctious so I don't really pay attention to the receipt, sign it and go.

As I'm driving home I recall hearing the total was less than what it should have been so I pull out my receipt and realize that they did not charge me for the power washer at all. CRAP, now I need to go back and deal with it but since I'm closer to home figure let me go home and drop off the boy and do my projects first.

Curious about the pressure washer I pull it from the box and it's immediately obvious that it was used and returned. So I hook up a hose to test it and discover the detergent pickup is fubared and there are a couple of small adaptors missing.

They sold me a new pressure washer that was anything but, were not honest about and forgot to charge me for it so I decided we were even.

Went to a local joint for a bite this evening, and there was someone's purse in the booth. I had dinner and a beer. At the time I was ready to leave, nobody had come to claim the purse. So then, I showed it to the waitress. She looked it over (I hadn't). I could then see there was money inside. She seemed surprised and said "most people would have just took it."

I wouldn't.

I disagree. Yes, some would. MOST probably would not.

SM, you did that new guy a service of karma.
His manager might have taken the difference out of his pay, or what-not.

Maybe he will do the same for his next few hundred customers.

Same here. And to make sure the person got the purse back to its owner with EVERYTHING in it, I would go in it and find a way to contact them, and not rely on the honesty of the waitress and/or cashier.

I think being honest will get you ahead. It may not make you richer on a transaction by transaction basis, but it will put you in the company of those that can bring you wealth.

Always good to hear a story about honesty.

My wife is a supervisor at a hospital. A
Recently, a cleaning lady found a Rolex watch with some type of Jeff Gordon and 24 inscription on it. She gave it to my wife, who sealed it in a bag and placed it in a safe. With some legwork, they were able to figure out who stayed in that room and tracked down the owner, who was a visitor. He was happy as a clam, as he had no insurance on it.

Back when paychecks were actual checks, I would deposit half into the checking account and half into savings. When i got the bank statement at the end of the month there was a "correction" to the account to make the deposit whole. I cannot remember how much this was, but probably around $1k. It took over 30 min on the phone to explain what happened, plus a trip back to the branch to clear it up.

I've been in situations like the OP and I've always spoken up... Why? Because I'm an honest person and that's just the way I'm made. I couldn't be any other way.

It really is the best policy.

I remember when I was waiting tables some old guy on vacation with his wife lost his wallet out of his back pocket. Took it up to the manager, told him how much dough was in it and where I found it, someone else's table.

The guy that waited on the old couple was sort of bent, "We could have split the money and nobody would know. That guy would have been happy just to get his credit cards and ID back."

I said, "I would know." He thought I was an idiot.

It is amazing how many people can't make change. Don't know how many times I have corrected cashiers.

I found a wallet in a restaurant several years ago.
It had ID, several credit cards and about $500 cash.
It also had some business cards that matched the name on the ID, so i called the phone # & the guy hadn't even realized he was missing his wallet.
I met him at his office & his jaw about hit the ground when he opened it up to find all of the contents still there.
About a week later, he sent me 4 box seats to a Giants game - i never asked for a reward, i just thought it was the moral thing to do.
good karma does come around
