Another Dog and Owners

Pulling out of my driveway this morning and see a small Bassett Hound possibly Corgi mix ambling down my street.

Pull over and she comes running over and tries to jump in my car.

We had heavy rains overnight and she's covered in mud so no dice on that.

Looks like she squeezed under a fence to get out. Don't recognize her but she has two collars on. One looks to be a bark arrestor or for an invisible fence, cant tell. But of course no tags.

Neighbor across the street gets home from dropping her boys at school. She's got a big GSD so she can't take her in. I'd have left her in my yard but she would have just squeezed under the fence again so we get some blankets and line my back seat and it's off to the shelter.

Get to the shelter and they ask where did I find her. Apparently out of their jurisdiction so they tell me to have a nice day. Ask them to check for a chip and bingo, dog has one. But it's not registered so still no idea on the owner.

Stop by my vet on the odd chance they recognize her. No luck there.

So I brought her to work with me. Hopefully by the time I get home someone has put up signs or has started calling the shelters looking for her.

So my rant, put a tag with the name, your contact info and any medical needs on your dog and if you go thru the trouble of chipping it then at least register the damn chip.

Feel bad for you and dog. Remember, "no good deed goes unpunished".

I believe the vet registers the chip. But they only do so monthly. So if it is newly chipped it might not show up as registered. If it is chipped and has a collar the tag for said chip should also be on the collar. I have several dogs - all chipped.
Keep us updated please.

The dog seems to be leaning over quite a bit.

She's a sweet girl.

She's hanging out under my desk right now.

Whining a bit but she's warm and dry.

I live next to a greenbelt. If she had found a way thru the fences into it she would be toast.

Too small to take on the Yotes that live there and not even a match for the local Bobcat population.

I really had no choice in the matter, you gotta do what's right.

That's how it got under the fence.

What's a "greenbelt"?

masraum 01-09-2012 09:42 AM

Looks like a real cutey, but needs a trim on those nails.

Natural undeveloped land within and around a community.

Definitely.

I've got a trimmer so if she ends up staying at my house tonight and will let me I'll take care of it.

When you put the phone # on the collar, put your CELL # on it. Because when you're driving or walking around calling for your dog, the cell # will let the person who finds them reach you quickly.

Definately a Basset. Likely wiggled through a hole in the fence and followed her nose.

There it is...simple.

Girl has some serious flippers, though:eek:

My dog;s dog tag reads- "If you've found me I'm LOST. 555-555-5555 Reward"

I've rescued several dogs and have gotten them back to their homes.

Looks like this will be your dog soon:

The chips generally need to stay updated in a database by paying a yearly fee of under $20. Not a tough or expensive task.

The dog looks a little unkempt.

Hounds sure like to wander if they are not kept properly contained. Some owners at some point in time say: See ya! After they bailed the dog out too many times at the shelter.

I always take strays in - tie them to the front of the house. If no info is on the collar, I call animal control and tell them to pick it up before I or anyone else in the family falls in love. ;)

Dunno if it works the same there, but local papers here will run "found" ads for free as a public service.

Greenbelts...another grand idea by politicians...designed so wildlife has brushy areas running through cities. The predators that feed on small pets love greenbelts...

Driving tip...when you see lines of brush on both sides of the road, look out....deer crossing.

The owners will probably let thier other dog "run away" with service like that.

Not keeping her. I love dogs and will have another at some point but right now it just does not mesh well with our lifestyle.

She seems to be in good shape, nails are a bit long but otherwise seems well taken care of. Teeth and ears are clean. She looks a bit rough since she was soaked to the bone and needs a bath to get the rest of the mud off.

Problem with scent hounds, they catch a scent and they are off and don't look back. At least Bassets are relatively slow.

genrex 01-09-2012 10:30 AM

There are Basset Rescue shelters all over the country. They will be happy to have another one. Nothing quite like a bunch of bassets running around... :)

Too bad...in the pic, she looks like a sweetheart personality...letting you handle her.

When I run way from home...I'm making a dash straight to Stomachmonkey or Bremner's place.
