Formula Vee
There is an old formula Vee race car for sale local to me. Man I bet it would make a fun autocrosser / track day car! I have seen these at autocrosses before and they look like lots of fun. Big fat tires and the rules say you can put a 1900 in it….

I had one back in the early 90s.... my first open wheel car. It was a Photon, if I remember. What a low-tech POS! Cheap, though :)
|
Well, cheap is what I had in mind.
|
There was one for sale in Ontario a couple years ago that was street legal... had been licensed when new!
|
I had a Caldwell D-13 Guy I sold it to, used it for autocross.

Cheap, fun, and pretty simple to maintain.

I race a vintage vee. I have not autocrossed it. You won't be allowed to do track days with clubs. Blending open wheel and closed won't happen. You may be allowed to do a test and tune day with a local vintage club or at a road course under other circumstances but they will be few and far between. Check out vintage racing in your area, it's a blast and in our region Vees are plentiful and very competitive.
Vee values run the gamut. A pos car will be cheap and then need a bunch of work to be competitive, reliable and safe. If you are a competent mechanic and/or can do the welding and body work then you are way ahead of the game. Just be careful of that $3,000 Vee that's been sitting for years. You will be much happier with a current car that has a fresh engine. A recently competitive car is for sale in our region with ok paint. $10,000. My car last summer. Theres a quick snapshot of it. needs everything. the motor is blown and its been sitting for years. |
500, tops. At a 1000 you won't be able to scrap what you can and throw away the rest because you will into it too much.
I hear that can be the most dangerous class in all of racing. Get a kart instead. |
If was cheap enough, I could see myself buying that just to dick around with whether I ended up actually autocrossing it or not..... hmmmm.... Where is this thing at? :D

Be careful. The only integrity that thing has is the frame. I've seen the tubing rusted from the inside out to where it may not be that obvious. I wouldn't touch it if its been sitting outside exposed for a significant period of time. No way that thing is worth $2k. I have a documented RCA Vee in excellent shape, good suspension, original bodywork, etc. minus engine and trans I'd let go for that and that car was race ready and driven in 2009. I took the engine and trans out of it to put in the Zink.
