Space heaters - educate me
 

I have been fortunate to land a job working from my home. For most of the year I am totally comfortable but for those couple months where the weather is colder I need some heat support. My home office is upstairs in a 10x12 room contained in a rather large dwelling. I would prefer to not run the upstairs furnace and simply heat my office. Temperature I am looking for is 72-73F. So given that scenario what does the the Pelican brain trust recommend? Will a simple 110V radiator heater work or is there something more efficient that I am missing?

My dad bought one of those 139 infrared heaters, it's quiet and would work for that sized room. They have the fire places going at their house so I stole it for my apartment, seems to be working well.

We've got a unit in our bedroom that cycles on/off depending on temp set, rotates, blows the hot air. Does a good job. Walmart for $50 or so... I'd check the brand, but the baby is sleepign adn I dare not turn on a light...

Use a single zone mini split heat pump. Look at Fujitsu at fujitsugeneral.com

In my home office I use a small 3' plug-in baseboard heater that has temp control and a timer. I have long granite countertops that use as desktops in my 10x12 home office. I have two under the desktops on opposite sides of the room, one right near me (I rarely use the second one).

I set the one near me to 75 deg., set the timer for two hours and I am perfect. The rest of the house stays cold, I am working very toasty. Been doing this for about a year and have noticed a signicant electrical bill savings as opposed to heating the whole house.

Here's what I am using - I am sure there are better solutions, but this works just fine for me.

Those work nicely for keeping a baby's room (or a cold bathroom, etc.) warm. I've purchase a couple and given to others. I have a much smaller ceramic heater that I've used in my garage when necessary to knock the chill off in a small area, but I couldn't find a "decently made one" before I purchased the radiator type a few years ago. All have temperature controls and will do fine though I'm sure there are much better option$ too.

This is what I was talking about. Seems to be heating my bedroom just fine...

Price vs. performance, I don't think there is a better solution for a 10x12 room. We have 3 of these. Excellent heaters.

Thing to remember is that max wattage you are going to get out of any 110 volt space heater is 1500 watts which gives you around 5200 btu's. Don't overpay because something looks fancy. We have a lake cabin that we heat in the winter with 3 space heaters we got from Walmart. Was just down there last weekend and the low at night was around 30 and they kept the cabin warm. They are not unsightly either.

I couldn't pass up on the "oil filled/radiator style" when they were clearing out their winter stock (about this time of year) at Homey De-pot a few years ago. Not this exact model, but less than $30. My parents' have been using one in a baby room for 3 years now...

This is what I went with - on sale for a couple pennies shy of $40. I debated the radiator style thinking they were more energy friendly but then considered they heat slowly and I would probably have to leave it running 24/day. My day is usually broken into 3 segments and preferred something quicker to task. Thanks everyone.
