It's 0, not O

Pet peeve of mine.

When people rattle of numbers and say "Ohh" instead of zero.

Don't know why but it drives me nuts.

I feel better now.

KFC911 01-14-2012 07:38 AM

ZeroK...got it :)...

stomachmonkey 01-14-2012 07:47 AM

mattdavis11 01-14-2012 07:49 AM

Something similar drives me nuts too. It's one thousand eight hundred...

William930t 01-14-2012 07:55 AM

so I will need to repronounce like this:

nine zero one
nine zero four
nine zero six
nine zero eight

sounds too European, but it is correct.

Superman 01-14-2012 08:00 AM

Another numerical detail that catches my attention is the use of the word "and" in saying numbers. "Three million and seven hundred and fifty-six thousand and three hundred and ninety two." Toss all the "ands" and it's "Three million, seven hundred fifty-six thousand, three hundred ninety two."

Tyson Schmidt 01-14-2012 08:02 AM

Doesn't bother me to abbreviate things. What's the last syllable in zero?

Pet Peeves? The "your" and "you're" problem. People who can't figure out the difference between a possessive pronoun and and a pronoun plus a verb seem a little dim to me.

I yearn for days of yore when this was taught in schools.

I never heard anyone who spoke computer lingo say o's and ones.

(BTW, the use of an apostrophe to show multiple nouns in the case of a single lower case letter is correct.)

redstrosekNic 01-14-2012 08:57 AM

Along with the your/ your're, I find they're, there, and their fairly annoying.

Right, the "and" is only supposed to be used if there are fractions

three hundred eighty three and three quarters
one thousand and three tenths
etc...

I find myself occasionally saying "o" for "0" (last night actually) and thought to myself "that was dumb."

If you attended a Catholic school for 12 yrs. like I did - instead of a gov't school - the nuns wouldn't have allowed these mistakes.
However, I still have to think before I use "lay" or "lie".
One of my ex-gfs used to enjoy correcting me.
.
Another one: exscape instead of escape.
.
Amazing how many TV anchor folks use improper English.

Another pet peeve of mine

3am in the morning, 10pm at night, etc...

for the computer guys

NIC card (Network Interface Card card?)

for us automotive forum folks, it's "brakes" not "breaks".

Didn't "get" the ones part, but when writing a zero, I always put a "slash" through it to differentiate between a 0 and an O. Comes second nature to me but I find it sometimes throws others off. It makes it an official "naught" :)

Brian in VA 01-14-2012 10:01 AM

I hate seeing 's when people mean to make a word plural. It is spreading like the plague.

VINMAN 01-14-2012 10:04 AM

Glad I'm not the only one that's annoyed by this!

Flieger 01-14-2012 10:28 AM

Neunzehnhundertneunundneunzig or Eintausendneunhundertneunundneunzig?
