Any one know video survalence systems?

I have a retail cigar shop and am thinking of adding video cameras. I Need the PP brain trust to advise me. I need 5 or 6 cameras and a DVR. Ive seen prices from $500 to $5000. What should I look for?

Thanks,
Bernie P

Not to hi-jack, but perhaps similar needs.

I'm looking for a system that covers a small shopping area (about 5-6 cameras). Perhaps weather-tight camera quality is most important for resolution and low-light clarity?

Are Wi-Fi connections mature enough/economical at this point?

Any leads to suggest? Security forums I find (obviously the wrong ones) have dated info, and you know how technology changes every few months.

i know that my crimson trace 5mw red lazar(laser) beam red death ray burns a spot on the camera lens each and EVERY time it gets pointed on a certain somebodys video camera.

i hear green lazar beam death rays work better than red lazar beam death rays, but WTF do i know????

so in other words besides a black can of spray bomb, lazar beams will defeat them unless placed in secure area.

bet ya didnt think of dat one DID YA?

I have a Night Owl 8 camera dvr system. Very happy with it. I picked it up at Sam's Club. paid around $700 . I can access it remotely at anytime, from another pc or my phone. It can also call me when a camera is activated.

Just an FYI concerning broadband for those who might be affected. I wanted to set up a security system that I could monitor via remote computer. We live in a rural area and our internet is through a radio transmitter/receiver system where the operator buys broadband from Cox and distributes it to his customers. He refused to sell me the system for security use because of the amount of broadband it would use up. So if anyone is considering this & is in a situation where bandwidth is limited, you may be SOL.

Access online on any computer...very easy to set up.

I was a systems engineer for a company that installed phone systems, structured cabling, burglar alarms, access control, paging/intercom, and cctv for commercial, upscale residential condominium towers, schools, and retail businesses.

I would go with an 8 camera system so you have some room to grow. I'd go with a least a Terrabyte of storage.

If you'd like send me a pm with some of the features you are looking for and I am sure I can spec out a nice quality system. It'll be a bit more than $700.00 depending on the cameras you choose and how many.

I'd stay away from the wireless stuff...Nothing beats the reliability and quality of a good hardwired system.

The cameras are infrared. Excellent pictures at night. Almost looks like daytime. The camera sensitivty is adjustable. I'd say maybe 40ft is the furthest they will activate. I upgraded 3 of the cameras to better ones. The origanl ones are decent, but a little grainy. I should have spent the xtra $ on the better cams.

Am in the middle of setting one of these up right now. Mine has 8 camera's and a terrabyte in storage and can be accessed over the internet. Cameras are motion triggered and work day/night.

Just something simple for the house, I have someone letting their dogs crap in my front yard and want to find out who it is to stop it. So far have less than $200 in the whole system.

thanks vinman. yer probably wanting to know why? and how i know about lazar beam death rays into the lens???

well awhile back............27months ago to be exact we had the "lil i'm a lawyer" problematic neighbor.

well as time has marched on, we have found that he continies to run a auto biz out of his property. and this is a huge no no. also they continue to build structures without permits and various other crap.

my neighbors have shorter fuzes than myself. we got together and decided this time(we have been thru this before with prior moron trying to run a biz out of there and ran them out on a rail tarred and feathered) that it was my turn to initiate county zoning proceedings. i said sure as the parties, drunk driving ,drugs, underage drinking, unattended fires, drag racing etc etc continued.

well after the "its my wall and i will paint my wall" crap(its MY WALL DOCUMENTED), they wanted to retaliate against us and "show us who they are."

me being me............well i decided to ante up and start taking pics of all of this. since i did my due dilligence re: laws of taking pics we DOCUMENTED EVERYTHING and called the cops quite a few times.

they continued the above crap, we continued calling zoning and cops.

one night from my 2nd floor which observes all of this, we saw vehicles being pulled in w/out plates. hmmmmmm perfect picture opportunity. and sure as poo the following day i got the owner and his kid dead to nutz with unplated vehicles and those unplated vehicles being driven on public highways. another really big no no. i took the pics thru chain link gate-perfectly legal as its NOT a privacy gate-dats the law.

they couldnt remove those vehicles fast enough from property. did my due dilligence and called the state motor vehicle division and found out he does not have a state motor vehicle dealers license which entails huge background check akin to a CCW background check. we knew they were up to something because MORE than (4) vehicles bought or sold in a year DEMANDS a state dealers license. which he doesnt have on file. already spoke to detective.

basically daddy travels, comes home gets another county complaint or hears about cops showing up at this house they dont live in, that the kids party in, beeatchs and moans and then the kids retaliate with their crap "thinking" they are helping dad.

IT NO WORKY DAT WAY! we call the cops, after kids pull crap and they retreat back into their cookie cutter gated community and its the classic cat and mouse. i have gone to lokal cop shop and spoke to LT and the SARGE re: all of this crap aside from getting an R.O. against them which i let expire.

i now have ANOTHER R.O. ready to go in front of judge beeeatch slapping them silly again listing all the kids crap so daddy knows whats going on.

in the mean time they installed a video camera pointing DIRECTLY into my property and my neighbor ladies property, my neighbor is PISSED BIG TIME.

the law reads here "where an owner reasonably expects privacy" which is my entire 1.5 acres because i have a 6ft privacy wall and then another 6ft privacy wall around pool area as per code.

the law states you can NOT climb a wall, look over a wall, or place a camera that LOOKS OVER THE WALL! just think "PEEPING TOM".

i have already contacted my attorney for either a "cease and desist" nasty gram, or a full blown lawsuit sending him into the stone age financially. my limited funds neighbor is all over this since i got the ball rolling. shes 65-70 and shes so afraid she went out and bought a smith j-frame .38. yeah its that bad.

anyway theres the lowdown. in the meantime we go outside the back door(camera shines into south windows and doors, pool area, since its been placed on a non permitted conex trailer at its highest point) and have fun with it.........meaning red lazar beam of death and the fickle finger of fate delivered at all hours to keep ourselves amused.

we are now on STRIKE 3 with county and this is SER-I-ASS BAD JU JU for him as he just recently HAD to sign a COMPLIANCE DOCUMENT stating he will come into FULL COMPLIANCE or be fined daily and/or face possible jail time if he doesnt come into compliance by august 31/2012. this will be costing him some big bucks as the county (who he ran off his property threatening them-bad bad move) has called me, asked me if they could come onto my property to view all non compliant crap(i supplied ladder) and county took countless pics nailing him to the cross for violations. in other words hes SO SCREWED HE AINT COMING UP FOR AIR for a long damn time and until his checkbook bleeds dry!

so there ya go re: legalities of audio/video taping people WITHOUT THEIR PERMISSION.

yeah as ALWAYS wez having wayyyyyyyy more FUN than they are..........because thats how we roll.

yeah wez having FUN with da neighbors. for furrthurr laughs we looked up county records and found out this IDIOT bought this house and his other(where they live) at the VERY FREEKING TOP OF THE SCALE DURING THE BOOM HERE...............and hes SO UPSIDE DOWN FINANCIALLY HE NEEDS A FREEKING A LIFETIME SUPPLY OF SCUBA TANKS TO BREATHE UNDERWATER! yeah hes a financial trainwreck and bought at the very top of the market before market hit the POOPER!

heres the "privacy laws" for us morons that cant stand legal-eze b.s. tort law writing:

you cannot film/video/record conversations on private property w/out permission.

you cannot film/video somebody on their private property.(think reasonable expectation of privacy).

at a biz, you CAN FILM/RECORD EVERYTHING FRONT BACK INTERIOR W/EXCEPTION OF BATHROOMS/CHANGING ROOMS/SHOWERS ETC!

if they have a wall, you cannot film take pics record conversations,etc.. ie. privacy wall. ask yerself this? "is it OK if i film my neighbors wifey,g/friend butt naked sitting by pool with HUGE BOOBS?" the ANSWER IS "NO"!

if they have a gate thats made out of chain link................that is not a privacy gate. its OK to film record thru a NON PRIVACY GATE. if its a solid PRIVACY gate its a NO NO.

can you place a camera on the very top of yer house and film neighbors property? answer is NO! if your house is 2 story like mine, its OK to film/video from balcony neighbors property(its called strategic/tactical advantage) aka "the high ground". and thats perfectly legal.

can you film/take pics in a public place? aka grocery store/likker store/qwicky mart/porno store? YES ITS PERFECTLY LEGAL! read papparazzi laws. done all the time.

can you film someone in a public bathroom/changing room in store or gym locker room? answer................NO very bad JU JU lawsuit. once again "reasonable expectation of privacy."

can you take pics of them driving drunk/reckless/drag racing/violating ANY LAW........................FER SURE TO-TALLY LEGAL!

remember privacy laws here have TWO REAL FREEKING UGLY HEADS(think 2 headed rattlesnake) that will get YOU into BIG DOO DOO FAST if VIOLATED!

civil side tort and a HELL OF A LAWSUIT.

and here on the CRIMINAL SIDE ITS A CLASS 4 FELONY!

so yeah read the laws, cuz it can bite ya hard.

i have now read that GREEN LAZAR (laser) BEAM DEATH RAYS WORK BETTER BURNING VIDEO CAM lenses! either or red or green your screen becomes the red or green puter screen of death while lazar beam on it. it actually burns a fuzzy on the exact spot it hits on lense. in other words after a enough times of shining lazar beam of death on cam lense, the entire lense will become FUZZY!

yucK YUCK YUCK!

!
If you remember I have a "neighbor issue" myself. That was the primary reason behind getting the cameras.

And yep, I was very careful with my placement of them as to not violate the scumbags privacy.

We're installing a HIKVISION DVR and cameras at work right now but I imagine this is on the high end of most budgets.
